web gallery advice

hello peeps,

I'm looking for advice on web gallery software (Apple Mac only), i want something that will upload only the additions to my web gallery, not rebuild the whole thing every time.

Photo blogging software sounds like it would do this but I've never used any and don't know what it would entail.

Your post seems to suggest you tried iWeb or similar, and come up against the crap that is called "updating" i.e. not rebuilding the whole time.

This is why I learnt some HTML and CSS, updating my site and backing it up are so easy now.

I have never user Photo blogging software either so cannot say.

I am happy to leave my site as is.

I did try Gallerie for the Mac, and used it for awhile, it is faster than iWeb, but I prefer the look and feel of my own designed pages.

I use TRANSMIT in order to upload the files and even edit directly the files many times for minor changes using TextEdit.

Personally, I got fed up with online photo album creation and went with Photium.com

Very highly recommended and includes all kinds of features for not a great deal of money. Extremely easy to use and professional results. Incidentally, the guy who does the coding used to be at ePhotozine (the sister site to Pentax User).

I tried iWeb for a few weeks when I first had my macbook, the code was awful.

I prefer writing my own webpages but have basic skills, getting a good looking 'gallery' is beyond my coding ability (as yet) so I use either lightroom or several gallery generating programs, which I then ftp to my site. However this requires uploading all the old content plus the new everytime.

I'll dig around a bit further.

I used SimpleViewer - which can work really well, especially if you can be bothered to use dynamic server content. To be honest, I had such a pain getting the HTML and CSS to work in all browsers that it was a relief to just forget about all and concentrate on the photos. Photium has great options for setting up pricing, postage etc.

I had hoped to sell a few prints over the course of the year... but I reckon the site is just lost amidst the sea of the Internet Either that or the images are the kind that people want on their walls! LOL!

I know what you mean Matt! I have sold no images yet. I don't agree that CSS and HTML is complex - it can be if you want it to be. I kept my deliberately simple.

I've found there's no alternative to getting out there in the real world and selling your photos face to face. For me, as a nature photographer, I tend to have displays at nature reserve visitor centres and I sell prints there, but web sales tend to be repeat orders from customers who've bought a print at an exhibition.

I have sold a few purely through the website, but not many.

I'm also coming to the conclusion that the vast majority of surfers expect what they see on the internet to be free. I've been thinking about putting prints in visitor centers etc. Thanks for the info so far.

I reckon that is a good point. What's on the internet is free right? - seems to be a widely held opinion.

I think that the academic community, who really started the whole thing off, were of the view that the Internet existed for the free exchange of information.

Then it became commercialised, and there was horror in the halls of academe.

G
