Frames, at least as in framesets, are annoying and should be avoided. They make it difficult to bookmark pages and pass links to people.

Iframes are a possibility but you really need a template-based approach where you create your links as a separate template which you can embed into any page that needs them.

I did my website in Ultraedit http://www.ultraedit.com/, and learned the HTML and CSS code at http://www.w3schools.com/

Haven't added much to it recently due to (a) boredom and (b) too many pictures to photoshop!

I produced a couple of web albums with JAlbum http://jalbum.net/, a java based program

Hi,

if you have several pages, then CSS and SSI (Server Side Includes) is the way to go. Learn to code the HTML yourself.. time consuming, but you'll know every letter of the code by the time you've finished.

There are plenty of sites that do basic layout templates, that you can then customize for yourself. I'll happily answer any questions you have.

I've just done the better part of 17 hours work, so that's as good as it gets for now, but I'll explain further in the morrow.

Cheers

Liam

That is kind of what I've been doing. Also saw a load of other things on there, wish I could order the website in book form as I hate reading off a screen for prolonged periods of time.

Woot! I figured this program out! Now I can do CSS and HTML in 'what you see is what you get' quick flip and work with the source quickly and in colour.

Now I just need to get my style right, elegant but neutral so any images embedded really stand out.

Oh and I've got to figure out how to assemble my multiple pages (Once I've got my base template finished) correctly.

I've never heard of Woot, but if it works for you, that's fine.

I don't know, I picked it up on an other forum and can't shake it...

I'm having fun with this, especially as Lightroom gives me an HTML gallery output which I can then modify a lot more than Lightroom allows. I like the look of the flash galleries but they are slower. Then again I can make any changes I like to the HTML one.

Now I need to figure out if people prefer scaling pages or single size pages that either remain to the sides or centred.

Personally I hate wasted space...

One of the first things you need to sort out is how you name the folders and pages within them, to give you your web addresses, you don't want to be changing things once you're halfway through.

Personally I can't stand long addresses, so I've gone for a descriptive folder name (eg. 'blog') and the page inside is just called 'index.htm'.

So if I want to tell someone where to see my blog, I say "daniel bridge dot co dot uk, forward slash blog", which is about as short as I could get it. You don't need to say "index.htm", the browser will just open it. If the pages inside the folder have different names, you have to state them and the extension too (.htm or .html), which I think is messy.

I don't have any folders within folders, so I'm not saying "...forward slash pictures, forward slash exhibitions, forward slash bedfords..." which is messy again.

Oh, and keep everything lower case after the first slash, otherwise that's a pain too! Before the first slash, it's not case sensitive, but afterwards it is.

Does that make sense?

Have yoy tried NoteTab for coding your HTML? I found that it helped when I did HTML course some years ago.

I am going to have a short address and few sub-pages. The only place where it will go into a second set of pages (and then a third) is the HTML gallery which will basically have one page per image and the shot index pages and the single shoot index.

I am also a fan of HTML and CSS, having learnt from "Zen of css design" and also CSS cookbook amongst others and the internet.

My whole site is done this way:- using Taco HTML Edit and CSS

http://homepage.mac.com/stevenbutterworth

Take a look and let me know what you think.

I also am not a fan of complex applications like Dreamweaver and Flash and all the others.

Since I took all templates out and roll my own, I have control and quickly update or any other task I want.

Its dead easy with a template driven system to put together a web site, but in my view as the site gets bigger, updating gets slower.

I'm currently trying to build something similar. I'm a absolute noob at coding - so I got a copy of FrontPage from my dad. I have done some work now - and it's ok for now.

Currently I'm looking for a picture gallery or flash gallery to put in. Any suggestions for a good one - which will work with FrontPage build sites?

I spent an age building a nice website with CSS, and SSI (Server Side Includes). It worked pretty well and use the "SimpleViewer" flash viewer.
You can view it here: http://www.photon.me.uk/mattmatic/index.shtml

However, in the end I got fed up with checking the code under Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Netscape and Safari (and then having to tweak the code to get it right) and ended up paying for a Photium site (which I can heartily recommend!): http://www.mattmatic.co.uk
(It's an absolute breeze to setup and include PayPal shopping basket too).

Hope that helps!

Thanks Matt. I will look in to that SimpleViewer. Just found a few danish forums with it as well. Google is so nice

Hope to have something running soon!
