Hi Matt,
Thanks for the tip. I know lightzone, but i am rather fond of bibble pro. It lets me work in zones also if i want too, especially for black and white stuff.
And as Lightzone is not supporting Linux i am afraid for the future and that is a risk i will not take.
Wish you great light,
Martin

As a long time Linux user, I've amassed a good selection of photographic tools that work nicely for me. Malo1961, you don't say whether you're using Gnome or KDE, but if it's pure Ubunto, then it's probably Gnome. Gnome is OK to start with but KDE is way more productive and has the wonderful Kuickshow viewer which is indispensable.
Some things you may find useful, if you didn't already know about them:
*RAW: Handles K10D PEF RAW files.
Some things you may find useful, if you didn't already know about them:
- Picasa - from Google for organising and cataloguing your images. Current version reads *istD pef RAW files. Next version (imminent) will read K10D RAW files, too.
- DCRaw - Quick and effective batch RAW converter. *RAW
- UFRaw - Interactive RAW converter and basic digital lightroom. Excellent.*RAW
- Rawstudio - Another RAW converter with different style interface. Also very good.*RAW
- The Gimp - general photo editor with all the Photoshop stuff you actually need like layers and masks. UFRaw plug-in allows you to read RAW files directly.
- Krita - KDE image editor. Not quite as powerful as Gimp but nicer UI.
- ImageMagick - Your best friend in fast image processing. Get to know this and you will laugh at the time people waste in Photoshop or money spent on other tools
- Hugin - a truly amazing panorama stitcher. I've used this to make seamless panoramas from photos taken by other people that they'd never intended to stitch together. I'll try and post an example, sometime.
*RAW: Handles K10D PEF RAW files.

Hi lenscape,
Thanks for all the nice suggestions. All the programs you mentioned are known to me. But......., as a not so experienced member of the Linux community i am not well informed about the deeper programming and terminal commands of Linux. That is the reason why i use Ubuntu. Debian based and almost foolproof if it comes to installing software. I tried to install ImageMagick last but all the extra commands i have to type in the terminal scared me away.
I am learning every day though, because i really want Linux to be my O.S. of choice. Like the speed, stability and safe work environment. And it gives my 3 year old Dell a new life, without having to upgrade to vista with all the extra cost and trouble that goes with each new version. I suspect that Kubuntu is the KDE version of Ubuntu(gnome) so maybe i give it a try, sometime in the future. I also will try again to install ImageMagick and hope that maybe you can find the time, to help me a bit, getting thru the installation on my ubuntu machine.
Good light to you,
and thanks in advance.

Hi Martin,
Ubuntu is a great choice! I am running that on a Dell laptop my other is an older mac running OS X. So I am also a windows free zone and have no intention of being otherwise.
I recently installed ImageMagick and have been experimenting with stuff what Lenscape says is dead on, the time saved and so on with this is amazing.

The GIMP developers are allso hard at work with a new UI. At the moment they are still thinking and discussing on what way to go.

just wanted to chime in agreeing with most of what lenscape said, although personally I much prefer Gnome to KDE, each to his own. Great thing with Linux is you get to pick your window manager rather than being stuck with explorer pah.
Hugin is awesome, I've even managed to get reasonable stitches out of images which weren't even taken from the same spot. That program is incredible.

you don't have to be mad to post here

After some difficulty's last weeks to get my new modem running under Linux, i now can definitive say goodbye to Windoze.( at last.......pffffff) So from now on it's Ubuntu and Bibble Pro who are helping me out. To bad i can't get L.R. to work under Linux, and don't want a dual boot system to keep it running on my pc. So if any of you Windows XP users is interested in a legal download copy of Lightroom 1.0(English), with off course a legal s/n just give me a P.M. I will not ask you to pay the top price Adobe is asking ( 299 usd )
