We have some visitors in town arrived from London, just in the last few days: they can't get used to the sudden change in temperature.

it warmed up to -5.... yay! well, sort of - it means that the roads will be treacherous tonight as the rise is just enough to make sure they are absolutely mirror polished by the traffic.

Still 39 degreees C at 9 pm or thereabouts - after a top of about 43 C today in Melbourne, Australia...
But all is not lost - if we're lucky it might cool down to 30 C tonight
Nasty business with icy roads in Europe though - at least the tyres here stick to the roads pretty well

After weeks at -10 to -16 degrees and over half a metre of snow, it's rather mild today, only -6 degrees.
Btw, why don't you get some decent winter tyres, UK folks?
And I would not be without my ABS and ESP for a moment. Both work wonders on my Passat Diesel.

Because we so rarely get so much snow / cold weather that the expense for one day a year is hardly worth it. A bit different this winter though Btw, why don't you get some decent winter tyres, UK folks?

I used to think that but the rubber in summer tyres don't work as normal if the road surface drops below 7 deg.C. So you might be better off for longer than you think on winter tyres.

summer tyre rubber is set up for high temps and so below 7 or so (pick a number below 10), winter tyres work better. Conversely, winters wear faster in warmer conditions.
Viking winters are set up for -10 downwards so wear extremely quickly in 20degrees (2mm lost in 1000km).

Blizzards, very heavy snow, drifts some as high a 7ft. It goes from bad to worse. Do not set foot in West Wales you may never get out
