There's a nice feel to the image.

Not for me I'm afraid.
Spray spots on the lens, odd stuff going on around the rocks almost like they came from a different photo, and the right edge of the photo is missing, not enough space at the top of the falls.

Agree with this, otherwise I like it a lot! I'm a sucker for a slow shutter speed waterfall shot. I love how the silky water makes the emerging sticks and rocks pop out so crisply.

Oh I'm not scared of such restrictions. The clichés haven't taken over the world just yet.

The problem is that once you've seen every man and his dog publish countless pictures of Acid trip HDR scenes, Single Tree in a field, Sunsets, Long Exposure waterfall, Long exposure beach with Groynes, Motor Racing with blurred tarmac and grass, etc then for me it does kind of water down the value of such pics.

Because even when you see a great version of said cliché it's still a cliché and really where's the creative satisfaction of simply copying?

Even when you come across pristine examples of the overdone genre they are watered down by the dearth of other offerings which are mostly mediocre.

So focussing on some constructive criticism on Questionable Carrot's long exposure waterfall pic.

Anyone who calls themselves 'Questionable Carrot' [QC] isn't lacking in individuality, character and creativity.

But this pic is simply a mediocre and lazy offering of an already overdone genre. QC I've been impressed with many of your pics and frankly I think you've been hypnotised with the long exposure water genre here and that's destroyed your normal quality control.

I can tell you've an admirable passion for photography, but as long as you get trapped into crass fashionable genres like 'long exposure water', you will be held back.

If 'long exposure water' is your calling then stick with it, but looking at this image, which is below par, I would hazard a guess you're just using this cliché as a prop.


Put your photographic passions into your gut feelings instead being a follower of overdone genres and you'll fly far above of your current satisfaction.

Sounds like a bit of a catch 22 Smeggy. Us newbies need to work through the clichés while we build confidence and knowledge. Then we can branch of into something creative hopefully. Unfortunately in the meantime that may mean lots of mediocre images for the old hands to wade through. Hopefully one day i'll be in a position to moan about the same problem and when i do i'll know i've made it.

The truth is I am really bored at the moment sitting at home sick (respitory infection) and cant get out. so... I am doing the ridiculous by dragging old photos from the external hard drive and tweaking them.

Great to see the feedback and the humour being taken in exactly the right way.

Personally, I'm still (almost) at the point where nothing is a cliché. Still a newbie, really. I've only ever taken a few milky water shots, so it's new to me. If I ever get a chance to take a photo of Durdle Door (which is unlikely) then I'll take one, as I, personally, have never taken one before, though 6 trillion (approx.) other people have.

But, like smeggy so eloquently said, only the outstanding images stand out, when so many similar shots have been taken and presented.

So, QC, carry on taking milky water shots if you want to (I will!) because practice is good and, when, one day, that striking opportunity rears in front of you, you'll be able to do it justice. That's what I keep telling myself, anyway!!

If I restricted myself only to truly original pictures, I'd probably never take any.

I'm more than happy with a well-executed cliché - better than that is a bonus.

If you worried about cliches then you wouldn't photograph anything. There are gazillions of images on the internet so very little that hasn't been seen before.

Just photograph what you like. It's original because it will be yours and nobody elses. The trying too hard to be different photo with odd composition, whacky for the sake if it angle or just plain load of blurry crap is just as bad in my book.

I was in the same situation exactly 2 years ago - pneumonia and pleurisy came to call which led to week in hospital and confined to barracks until late March. You are doing exactly what I did, nothing wrong with it at all and the next best thing to being out and about. Probably.
