Hi Tim, it's great to have a play with Photomatix. I would try the default 'Fusion' option as a starting point for your pics - it is a much more subtle setting than some of the others. Tone mapping can look great on BW pictures, but tends to make colour ones a little too unreal. I suppose it all depends on what you are trying to achieve but I find that with a subtle fusion effect you can enhance the tonal range without making the picture look like a HDR shot.

On a more serious note, thanks David - sound advice of the type I'm after. I'm not a fan of the heavy HDR look, and just want to explore bracketing and photomatix as an option for situations like sunrise/sunset when the DR overwhelms the sensor and even lightroom/PP can't recover the range. I seem to be drawn to such conditions, with 'mixed' success so far . The other option, of course, is on-camera ND grads ... which is my next project if I can't get the images I'm after via bracketing+photomatix.I find that with a subtle fusion effect you can enhance the tonal range without making the picture look like a HDR shot.

Back in April I took some bracketed exposures of the sunrise at Painswick Golf Course (with all the earthworks there), so dug these out and had a play with Photomatix - which I got hold of a couple of months back.
