It was looking at your Avatar which made me wonder if the same thing would work on the metalwork. I'm just learning to use photoshop so I know what you mean about keeping editing to basics.

There is so much that "could" be done to your image - but it would all be the personal preference of the person suggesting it.
Better that you make a copy, and work/experiment on the copy. You may end up with things that you do not like afterward, but you will evolve your own style of work.
Just remember to [Save As] after each session - so that you have the original and a copy of the original.
You have tried B&W, now try a Sepia tint (or a Blue one), and play with the brightness, or the dodge and burn; but above all, have fun!

Sorry to say, but this does nothing for me. There must be something more interesting to take a picture of. Or to make this more intersting, get some directional light casting shadows. Close in on the key and its shadow for example.
Hope that wasn't considered too brutal

There's nothing wrong with how the picture was taken - in fact it's quite nice in a way, rich colours, nice dof... it's just such a commonplace looking subject - I'm a big fan of 'making art from the mundane' but somehow this shot doesn't quite hit the spot. If the wood had been old and weathered rather than just a veneer, and the handle was more roughly hewn, however....
