The 150-450.
A heavy beast, but it almost always makes it in my bag. I have found many uses for it, landscapes, portraits, school plays... it's not just for birds. IQ and handling are both stellar. Just keep in mind that handling a 500mm has its learning curve.

Several 500s in M42 on Ebay tonight including a couple of nice Russian mirror jobs
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

If you're looking for a used lens, try to get your hands on a Sigma apo tele macro - the one with 77mm filter thread.
The DA* 300 + TC will also be great. Bigmas (Big Sigma zooms 50-500 and 150-500) will also be a good option.

A Sigma tele-macro would be the very rare 400mm f5.6, with a 77mm thread.

Once you get to the 500 mm Sigma zooms they are f6.3 at the long end with an 86mm fiter thread,

Depends on budget, the 150-450 is supposed to be very good but very expensive. Depends on whether you need a zoom (better for airshows etc) or a prime. Lenses over 400 will always be big & heavy unless you go for a mirror.

Mirrors are a fraction of the size & weight and much easier to handle. Their fixed apertures aren't really a problem with a DSLR. The Tamron 500 or Sigma 600(?) are probably the best options.

I have a 67 500/5.6 which is very good when stopped down on my 645D. I haven't really tried it on the K-1 (too cumbersome to lug around). I also have a KA Sigma 400/5.6 (not sure of the filter diameter but it's one of tne 'synchro-focus' versions) - it shows some 'misting' which seems common (the web suggests possibly lubrication related?).

No matter how long you go, you'll always want more reach. There's an argument you'll get better images with a shorter, easier to handle lens on a crop body or cropping in post.

I think that must be the same item. Just missing the .html at the end.

On topic, have you tried the DA* 300 with a TC?
All the gear with no idea

349.99. It has been up and available on their site for a couple of weeks at least but yes, bought in the last hour. Maybe someone on this site nabbed it and if they did, good luck to them.

I have a Tamron SP 500mm, case, filters etc. that I bought some time ago and haven't used since Noah built the ark. Something like that?

In my experience, the Sigma 150-500 was not a very good lens at the long end - mine is now in Russia, and I hope the buyer has had better results than I did
K-3 II, K-3 and a K-70 from SRS (having now relegated the K-30 /"K-50" to a backup body), & some Sigma and Pentax lenses (and a lot of old 35mm gear!)
