In my experience, the Sigma 150-500 was not a very good lens at the long end - mine is now in Russia, and I hope the buyer has had better results than I did

I believe that.

The only supertele zoom lens for Pentax-K with really good optical performance and AF is the D FA 150-450mm (of course also the F(A)* 250-600mm f5.6, but they're legendary).
I'd recommend prime lenses for focal lenths >400mm. FA* 400mm f5.6 or the DA 560mm f5.6.

I got decent results out of the last version of the 50-500mm (OS DG HSM) at the long end and it really did come into it's own when requiring close focus. The FA* 250-600mm I had was very nice but a pain to carry so almost never went anywhere whereas the 150-450mm is literally on my K-1 95% of the time and is very sharp at 450mm.

I do wish Ricoh would bring out a full frame AF 1.4x teleconverter though, just can't understand why they haven't considering we have the DA* 200mm, DA* 300mm, D-FA 70-200mm, D-FA 70-210mm and D-FA 150-400mm (and even some of the old FA* lenses) that would all benefit from it.
No equipment list here but thanks for taking an interest. My Flickr

Got to agree - it seems strange that what should be a relatively simple product (bearing in mind that they've already produced the superb DA version) hasn't been released - surely the take up amongst those Pentaxians with even one or two of the lenses Mike mentioned would be pretty big

And back on the original topic (400 to 500ish lenses) - if you come across an FA*400/5.6 at a decent price then it's a lens I'd recommend, Quality is very good and the lens is so compact and light for it's focal length - I picked one up a couple of years back (not at a decent price ) and since getting it my F*300/4.5 has had very little use

All this reminded me that I acquired (from one of our members) a Kalimar f8/500 some while back. It's a loo -oong, thin thing, about 14inches unextended, thankfully with a tripod mount. I recall trying it and being very impressed with the results, if not with the rather difficult handling. I haven't used it since so I shall locate it and have another go with it.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

The thing that puts me off the FA* lenses is the silver finish. I had the 250-600mm and 200mm and while they were very nice lenses I always have to buy the best condition I can find and I was always concerned they would get scratched and end up looking tatty.

Daft I know but there you go .....

That finish wasn't the most durable either. Perhaps a wrap of some sort could be produced for those lenses?

A novel solution would be the Pentax K mount ZOOM 400-600mm F8-12 Reflex
Pretty scarce, but they do turn up.

There as one presently listed on eBay (London seller.)

Hi
I have the 150 to 450 Pentax zoom, a great lens but is a heavy beast. I picked up a Spiratone 500mm F8 mirror lens (made in Japan, Spiratone always seemed to find great Japanese lens) Easy to handhold, takes great pictures. This is the lens I pack when I am on a photo jaunt and may need it. On my K S2 it becomes a 750mm lens at F8. I use it with my Pentax film SLRs also. I have used various products from Spiratone over the years with great success. Sadly they have been out of business for years. If you find this lens it will be in a t mount so it can be adapted to any camera body. I have the Pentax t mount and also the Konica t mount. I will pack the Pentax zoom when I know that I will be using it for a specific shoot and carry the appropriate tripod also. Just some insight from the American side of the pond.
