Wallasey Float

I went for a walk round Wallasey Float yesterday evening. I was a little late to spend long there, but there was some evening sunshine so I got a few shots.
Definitely more to be got there.

1) Balance of lighting too extreme for my liking, but a nice silhouette.
2) Nice, but for me it's let down by the extreme uniformity of the pale orange sky. Foreground and silhouette very nice.
3) If I had taken that, I would hang it on my wall (to put this in context, I average about two of my photos added to a wall per year).

I think you're oversharpening your photos a bit...

I would play on the uniformity of the 2nd shot and crop out the water and darken the dark stuff even more so it's bi-colour Black and orange

The first one was always meant to be a sillouette.
I didn't sharpen these much Stephan, but I'll go back and play with the originals.
As for Smeggy: I love your idea with the cranes. I spent a while bringing out the light in the warehouses, but I think your idea might work better.

It's only the first one really, you cn see the halo running around the edge of the buildings and the sky.

I really like the second photo, at first i didn't know what to think about it but every time i see it i'm liking it more and i don't know why...

I sometimes get a halo around high contrast object when bringing up the fill light in Lightroom

My istDL2 was more prone to this sort of effect than my later Pentax cameras... viewed at 100%, there were obvious sharpening artefacts in the images. However this shouldn't be a problem except in severe crops, and it made images look sharp and punchy!

Ah! the halo. Now I know what you mean!
That was from the noise reduction, it was really quite noticeable at first. I'm still getting used to Photoshop CS2, I don't find it as intuative as Paintshop. I'll have another play.

And I definitely will be going back

I like the 'bi-colour' of these as well. No. 2 is my pick, although a play with various crops might be worth it?

On this occasion I think the halo is real and the result of the extreme back-lighting of the image. "Rim-lighting" was an effect people aimed for using film before there was any possibility of over-sharpening etc.

So I could have called it Rim Lighting and said it was deliberate? Darn!

As it is, I revisited this one and set the sharpening option in noise reduction to 0, then sharpened the image after running the noise reduction and the halo pretty much vanished.

You probably edited out the rim light! Personally, I like the halo in this case as it gives the buildings a nice crisp definition. But then what do I know...
