Vivitar 2 X converter - not compatible?

I have a Vivitar 2 X tele converter which served me very well in the film days, fitting between my old K1000 and a variety of lenses. It doesn’t seem to work on my K-x. I have tried it at the back of the Pentax 18-55 zoom, the Pentax DA*300mm and a Vivitar 135mm telephoto. Whether the camera is set to ‘Auto’ or ‘M’ (or any other setting) no image is recorded. With the two Pentax lenses the camera ‘clicks’ but the image is totally black. With the 135 it sounds as if the shutter does not function. Am I missing something simple, or is it simply incompatible? Any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

PS I have read in the forum about the 1.7 converter, which I understand is no longer produced. But should it come up on ebay, is it worth considering? I'm thinking especially with the DA*300. Again, thanks in advance.

Have you set "Using Aperture Ring" in the menus to "permitted"? If not, the shutter will not fire.
Best regards, John

My (probably similarly ancient - late 70s vintage) Vivitar 2x worked on my K-r only in Manual mode, but I haven't tried in on the K-5iis.
