I don't think the exposure mode matters .... Perhaps not green mode, but I've used M mode with catch-in-focus many times. M mode is the only mode that works with non A-type manual lenses , with stop-down metering.
The main setting to remember, once CIF is enabled in the menu, is to use AF.S autofocus mode .... Rather unintuitive that ....

I am currently looking at at an M24-50 f 4 .
However would i be able to use CIF in a studio?
As I believe i can shoot in Manual mode in A studio and Catch In Focus only works in AV mode. Regards
