Vista wont detect camera... detects everything else. Help?

I have a laptop that I upgraded to Windows Vista (yeah, I know but I had the flu and needed to do something while locked indoors for three days)

Anyway, I finally got everything working. Even the USB works now after three days of scanning dozens of web pages, throwing things against the wall and sacrificing a small goat. I can now hook up SD cards, thumb drives, USB hard drives, etc... all work well.

Yet, I cannot directly connect my K10D to the thing and access data.
I run Remote Assistant, and although it runs it does not detect the camera.

Any ideas on what else I might have to twist and turn until Vista squeals and lets me get the K10 working?


At this point, I'll probably restore XP if I need to go on site an do tethered shooting, but Id like to get it working on Vista,if not just for the sake of the time I would have otherwise wasted.

Are you running the right version of Remote Assistant for your camera. You need version 3 for the K10D, which I believe contains drivers for the camera.

One mistake you made though, it should have been a large goat . . . signed by Microsoft. Small unsigned goats just don't work with Vista

I went out and got the extra large goat as suggested.



Actually, read up a few dozen more pages... the silliest solution worked.
I simply rebooted with the camera connected to the PC. The camera was detected, and Remote Assistant worked flawlessly.
The camera is now detected even if it is not connected during bootup.

I don't know exactly why it works, but Vista appears to have its brians all sorted out... for now.

Glad you got it sorted. You can probably get a refund for the unused goat.

Don't you throw the goat out of a bell tower window and it brings you good luck for the rest of the year.
Or have you already done that and as a result your Vista problem was solved :

I'm sure next time I plug in a new monitor, or put in a different CD/DVD or even plug the thing into a different power socket that I will have to install new drivers. I think I've read that I may need to face North and do some strange dance in a tu-tu to appease the Vista demons if I move the laptop to a different room.
Hopefully the goat can wear the tu-tu instead...


Just when you think Microsoft couldn't make the operating system any worse... they "innovate" and give us Vista.


What I really like... I can run the Remote Assistant just fine, but it won't detect the camera. Thanks to earlier postings, I know you have to run the software as "Administrator". Of course in doing so, I now have to answer questions whether I really, really, really want to run that program.
I feel so much safer and more secure now that Microsoft is protecting me from remotely using my camera.

Its D-Link i have a gripe with at the moment, whenever i want to change my ISP password (i found out the hard way,) that you also need to change it in your modem settings as well. So I go through all that click on apply and away i go. Next time i log in WRONG PASSWORD ENTERED GRRRR. Well it turns out you have to go into the tools section of the modem install and click on save settings there. What is the point of having an apply button if it doesn't save your settings (isin't it the same thing) and why not have the save button on the same page. I'm sure they do it just to frustrate me

Oh the joys of PC's!!

I still laugh at stupid basic errors like:-

'No keyboard present, press F1 to continue'

Cancel doesn't cancel

End now doesn't End now

Ignore doesn't ignore

Copying files, it can say 36,000 hours to go, then finishes in 5 mins.

2 secs remaining can also take 5 mins!

It still amazes me that Vista apparently took 5 years at a cost of $6billion to make, and the basic errors still defy belief!

I am glad that this topic was started, it has been very amusing to read and a warning to avoid Windows Vista at all costs.

Hmm, maybe that was my problem. I actually needed drivers for my credit cards! Argh!

Funny thing.,.. now trying to get my SDHC card to be readable by Vista. Cannot find any useful information on this issue yet. (It did work fine in XP.)

So far five different devices with five different problems and each with their own individual solution. I just cannot believe this much work is necessary when it just seemed automatic with XP.

I'm one of the poor guys "working" with Vista. Sometimes, it feels like Vista is working against you. To show the point, if you have a Hewlett-Packard scanner, and you decide to install a Bamboo Fun Pad, the combination "HP- Bamboo" driver will screw up th driver for the scanner. When you want to remove the scanner driver to re-install it properly, you are going to find out that the "uninstall" feature of the driver for the HP scanner won't work. So, You'll check with HP, and they will tell you to go in the register and un-install it manually. Then, you are going to discover that said combo "HP Bamboo" driver took a line out of the Vista program, so you have to take off everything in the computer and re-install it after without either the scanner or Bamboo driver. I learned my lesson the second time I tried to install both drivers. I still feel like crying when I think about it!

Why change a winning horse? I am quite happy with my XP Professional, and have no intention of "upgrading" to Vista. Hopefully, Service Pack 1 for Vista will sort out many of the problems for Vista users.

As far as I know, owning a legal Vista license entitles you to downgrade to XP if you so want.

IMHO Vista doesn't give you anything you don't have in XP apart from a pretty face and a bunch of unneccesary security features. In addition to a heavy use of your memory.

Maybe I'm just lucky but I have had Visa er! I mean Vista on my laptop for the last eight months and so far I've had no problems with it at all. It picked up my K100D Super straight away.
