Vignetting

I have a Pentax ME Super, with 28mm, 50mm and 80-200 lenses. I also have screw-in UV and polarizing filters which fit the 28- and 50mm lenses, and also a Cokin mount with some square filters.

I'd like to use my various filters with my 28mm lens, but all of them cause vignetting to a greater or lesser degree, the most with the polarizer and the least with the Cokin mount.

I can get away with it with the square filters by simply holding them in front of the lens, but obviously this is not very satisfactory.

Are there any cheap solutions, or will I have to buy special kit? TIA for any suggestions.

Polarisers don't work very well with wide angle lenses because a large expanse of sky will have varying degrees of polarisation across the field of view and this will show up as variations in colour intensity. The wider you go, the worse it gets. However, with very wide lenses the vignetting in the lens causes nice fall off of illumination in skies anyway!

But back to your problem. The filter just needs to be very close to the front element of the lens, and large enough not to cause vignetting. Perhaps the P series Cokin filters would be a better choice (they are larger) or alternatively the newer thin screw mount filters which have been designed with this very problem in mind.
Best regards, John

I've never used the square filter, so can't tell which one better.
But I use a screw-in Kenko cir-polarizer over a UV filter on M 28 mm or A 50 mm. never have any vignetting problems.
Hope it helps.

Forgot to tell.
Those filters are standard filter not a thin or special ones
