I had a similar experience using a Canon powershot a few years back. The display was totally black, but the lights on the camera were in and everything seemed fine.
I was fumbling about with all the dials and buttons and ended up turning the camera to portrait and the screen magically reappeared.
I began to think there must be something very strange going on with a loose wire.
We got into a café and I took the camera out. It was fine!
And then I had a flash of inspiration. I put my polarised sunglasses back on and the display vanished!
Ach well, you live and learn.

It's good to know that this clearly quite common problem is not just restricted to Pentax cameras.

Out on my dog/photo walk today I suddenly noticed that the information displayed in the viewfinder had disappeared. It was snowy and so very bright but I hadn't noticed this issue before. So I turned the camera off and on but it didn't come back. I really have not much idea what most of the menu items on the camera do so I spent ages scrolling through looking for the one where I had inadvertently turned the display off. I couldn't find anything. I went into a heavily wooded spot where it was much darker and I could just make out the information. So I spent ages again looking through for the option to adjust the brightness. Couldn't find it. Changed to a full battery, no difference. There was clearly an issue with the camera. The possibilities were that there was a faulty LCDdisplaycontrolunitpanelthingy or that the cold weather had affected the camera. On returning home I googled a bit but I couldn't find any other similar cases. Clearly the first thing that would be tried on repair would be a reinstall of the firmware, so I might as well try it myself first. With everything prepared for a firmware update I thought I'd check one last time. Magic, the display had returned to its former brightness. Shortly after I realised that my reactolite glasses had also returned to their clear state.
