Viewfinder grid on K20D

Everyone,
I am considering the purchase of a K20D, as an upgrade from my K100D. I have looked at the user manual on-line, to see if it is possible to superimpose a nine-square grid in the viewfinder, to aid composition. If this is not possible, is the only solution a different focussing screen.
Thanks
K100D, K20D, PKA 50mm 1.7, PKM 28mm 3.5, Tamron 24-135mm, PKAF 18-250mm, too many Tamron MF to list.

This is something that I would find useful as an aid to composition, not sure if you can do it in live view or not.

I think Katzeye make a "rule of thirds" focus screen.

There is an option in setting the Live View " select (live view ) in the playabck menu". A grid display can be selected to display on the camera monitor in live view, as mentioned pentax also do a focus screen grid .

I've change the focus screens to LL80s on both my K10 & K20. Found it very useful - helps with composition and, assuming I'm paying attention ensures my verticals are vertical and my horizons are horizontal!

Bit more expensive now than when I bought mine - but worth it still IMHO.

Maybe it's me, but when I've looked at the LL80 screen I'm not sure how it assists with 'the rule of thirds'? The screen is actually divided into quarters, both vertically and horizontally.

Am I missing something?

I think you're right, JohnX.

I can recommend the Katz Eye screen for those who want Rule of Thirds lines (optional) as well as a split prism.

Rule of Thirds is a great tool - but it's not an adsolute - i.e. not necessarily applicable all of the time. Some great shots have been taken by the good n the great of photography that trash the rule utterly.

If it feels right, it usually is right.

As one who has a tendancy to shoot with a slight incline - left horizon slightly higher than the right - the LL80 is a great help.

No sure that the extra £60-70 for a Katzeye RoT screen really worth it.

I prefer a Rule of Thirds screen to a 16-square one because it's less cluttered and distracting. The lines can be used for alignment even when not adhering to the Rule of Thirds. I agree that rules are made for breaking!

I have two rule of thirds grid screens for my K20D. One is the Pentax LL80 screen and the other is the Katzeye screen.

The Katzeye screen is only a rule of thirds grid with ground glass and no other focus aids. There is no split screen or focus prism.

The Katzeye screen is very nice but I sometime get a slight exposure discrepancy in some situations, but generally only about a 1/3rd of a stop.

Either way, a rule of thirds screen is very handy.
