Video codecs confusing me

Good morning Everyone.

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on a problem I am having with my K5 video files.

I have tried to open them for editing in premiere elements 9 (trial version) and the message displayed says that the file type is not supported or that the relevant codec is not installed. I have tried to find out via Adobe website and via Google and have found out that AVI file is a Mjpeg codec. I have downloaded a codec converter that was recommended but this did not work.

I have Sony Vegas 10 arriving in the next day or two - I am hoping this will solve the problem.

I think I maybe a little confused as to how this all works.

The video footage is the nativity for my sons school and the resulting dvd will be going out to all the parents.

I hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance

Assuming you are using Windows I would try downloading the K-Lite codec pack.

You should download the 'Full' or 'Mega' version if you are on 32 bit Windows and both the 'Full' or 'Mega' and 64 bit versions if you are using 64 bit Windows.

Full
Mega
64 bit

Quite a few sites recommend the Morgan codec.

You may not have any problems with Vegas which is a superb package. I was previously having problems with Canon codecs until I installed Vegas.

Thanks, Vegas should be here tomorrow so fingers crossed it works.

I will go down the line of more codec downloads once I have tried Vegas.

I dowloaded a codec from a site recommended on the Adobe website to no avail.

I did have a codec conflict between a program I had installed and the kr... I had to remove all the codecs, by moviing theminto a different file folder then re-nstall the apple and quicktime codecs one by one and it worked fine.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Sony Vegas Pro 10 & 11 have no problems working with K5 video files. I am currently rendering an DVD sequence of K5 clips using Sony Vegas Pro 11 as I type this.

Does beg the question - if Sony can do this why not Adobe? Glad this was the trial version.

Premiere was always quite specialised with regard to the files it would work with also what processor the PC had earlier versions wouldn't run on AMD.

Not sure how it works with a K-5 but Videostudio was always a very
nice easy program to use.

popped home at lunchtime and it has been delivered. If it works it could be the best £13 I've spent in a while- whilst its not the current edition it seems extremely cheap to me!

A bit late on this one, but the Morgan codec worked for me.

Algi mentioned the dreaded Adobe Premiere, it always amazed me that Adobe could produce market leading software like PS and something so desperately bad as Premiere.

Well this Vegas software looks very tasty. Firstly it deals with the video files without any problems.

Seems way more flexible than I will ever need. In about 15mins I had 4 video and 3 audio tracks on the timeline- just a question of cutting and pasting the best bits together now - a steep learning curve ahead I think.

Thankyou to you all for your kind words of assistance- if anyone knows any good basic tips for Vegas I would love to hear them.

thanks again
