Value for the money

Hi Stefan Im interested in what ever offers value for money at all the price ranges. I agree the Tamron 90mm has had some very good press as of late.A freind of mine who shoots with Nikon has this lens and uses it on his D3 and has been very happy with it.

If we're talking zooms having owned the Sigma 70-300,
Tamron 70-300 & now the Pentax 55-300 I'd say that even though the Pentax is the dearest of the 3 it offers the best value as it has best IQ/characteristics of the 3
I also have the Sigma 17-70 which gets my recommendation, as does the Sigma 10-20

Value for money???
Hold on:
SMC A 1.7/50 MM ( € 30,-)
SMC K 1.8/55 MM ( € 20,-) IQ wise runs circles around the New DA* 55.
Every M42 SMC/Super Takumar ever made.
To put it blunt. And this is going to hurt some people.
For the price of one DA* Zoom you can buy all the SMC Takumar primes covering the same focal length. And each of this primes will have a larger aperture opening and outperform or at least equal the DA* zoom.
Now....,how is that for value for money.

Hi Ian, photos of that lens doesn't come by here often but on the Dutch form you see them a lot more and it looks good. I've never handeled one but will try one in the shop, I went for Pentax mostly for quick-shift.

Sorry, call me a philistine, but I'm quite keen on autofocus too..I did own the SMC A 1.7/50mm for a while but never really found manually focusing with the GX10 to be much fun Yes Martin you're completly right I was wondering before someone would mention them but zoom is handy most of the time though.

philistine, autofocus is handy for most form of photography but not all, atleast not for me.
For everything in the studio I prefer manual focus and for the studio zoom isn't an piority either, also with macro manual is often used.
Martin was talking about focal length so thats were the zoom comes from, didn't thought about auto focus to be honest but you're right Simon

Hi Martin is Takumar still producing there lenses I have done a search and cant seem to get anything other than reports or links to forums relaiting to the company and there products.

Hi Ian,
I wish they did, but no. They still are available on the S/H market and each of them is a piece of jewellery. Optically,mechanical and focusing wise they are the best Pentax ever made. Of course you have to deal with the limitations. (lack of AF and automation)though you can use them in AV mode.

I've never used a Zenitar but I'm with you on the other two I'd suggest the following Russian lenses:
Jupiter-9 85/2
Zenitar 16/2.8
Helios-44 50/2
They punch well above their weight and can be picked up for beer money (at least they could before the recent plunge in Sterling).
They are even well made (by fsu standards ) The Zenitar is one of my favourite of all lenses and has a permanent place in my bag.

I use a hood with my Jupiter which largely negates the flare but I find my Sonnar (and my Pancolar) are no more prone to flare than my more modern lenses.But even in their heyday I thought that these Russian lenses were subject to terrible flare and the coatings were quite limited?

And the question was what offered the best value for money. With a Helios 44 costing about the same as a Pentax lens cap then I struggle to think of any lens capable of quite so much bang-for-buck... Mind you, I might be biased as I'm selling one at the moment

The Zenitar is sharper on my DSLRs than the A16/2.8, FA17-28 and DA10-17 (at 17mm).
It is more susceptible to flare, although it's possible to attach an additional hood using a 60-62mm step-up ring.
