UV filters.

Well not should but generally would be is what i meant as uv comes from the sun and a uv filter used outside would help block uv
maybe saying should be used outside wasn't meant in the way i made it sound was talking hypethetically, point is that i'm asking is......i'll rephase it......i'm led to believe that the main purpose in having a uv filter is to protect the front element, but used outside will help block uv, if used indoors will it have any effect on image quality.
In simple terms i'm asking, is it ok for me to leave uv filters on my lenses without taking them off at all.

You do know how to open a can of worms don't you?
Personally I don't spend 300 quid on a lens and then potentially compromise its quality by putting an extra flat piece of glass in front of it. That's me. Also you do hear mixed opinions on the effectiveness of the protection as well. I rely on a lens hood by and care for protection.

I have seen somewhere? an advert for a lens protection filter, if I remember its plain glass, so would this be a better type of lens protection to use :
I also use a UV filter (must get one for my 55-300) as protection of the front glass on all my lenses

Glover this is indeed a can of worms like Mike says, it has been discuss quite some times now.
UV filter will have limited effect on digital because there is an UV filter in front of the sensor, so basically you've a piece of glass in front of your lens making flare more of a problem and costing money while it does nothing.
As for protection, I always show this video, don't worry it's a Canon lens

As the video shows the coating of a lens is quite hard now what will happen if you did this with a filter on it, filter shatters, shatters of the filters are sharp and hard and you get scratches
There are of course exception, those are sandstorms, salt water or other chemicals for the rest use your hood, far better protection

You know what....the amount of times i've looked for a search option and not been able to find it, then you post that link, i go back to the main page then see the little tab in the top right corner.

No no thats fine, didnt take offence just didnt know what you meant, now i know i completely understand, feel a bit of a fool to be honest after not seeing the search option up untill now, and the search option will now be well used, thanks all the same to both of you, i got my answer anyway and the filters are going

UV should be used outside i know but what about indoor photography for example in a studio environment, should it stay on or off, will it make a diffence to image quality?
