You might need to try one to see if it suits. Some people love using pens, others prefer the mouse.

I use a pen all the time now. I use a basic one. The Wacom pen & Touch. Was a bit awkward at first to get used to. But now, I wouldn't go back to using a mouse..

I have an old Toshiba M4 convertible laptop w/ on-board digitiser, and VNC-it into my main PC. Means I can relax in front of the telly and work with the pen on the tablet. It's not touch-sensitive but that's not a problem.

I use a Wacom Intuos4 M tablet with Photoshop, but still use a mouse for everyday computer use.
The pressure sensitivity and accuracy of the tablet is I would say almost essential when retouching in Photoshop if you intend to go beyond just applying global changes and corrections. Making local edits to small prats of the image such as using the spot healing brush and masking areas of the image is much easier with a pen.
I haven’t used Photoshop Elements so don’t know how far you can go with it compared Photoshop, but if you intend to get very creative like painting and drawing etc. then you really will need to use a pen and tablet.
Wacom tablets are well supported and work with just about all the CAD/graphics software. Lack of support and poorly written drivers can be a big problem with some of the cheaper tablets.

I've been wondering about alternative input devices. I got severe RSI using a regular mouse a couple of years ago while editing images. It was extremely painful. I remedied it by getting an Evoluent vertical mouse, which is much more ergonomic and naturally fits the wrist movement. I can't use a regular mouse now.

I also had very bad RSI fro continual mouse use, day in day out CAD user, totally solved by using a Wacom tablet and pen.

I've never been able to understand why people use a mouse
The Logitech TrackMan Marble Optical is much better and can be used
on the arm of a chair etc. ebay_link £27 posted.

It's not a Trackball in as much as the ball is controlled
with the fingers in the same way as a mouse and not
with the palm of the hand.
The first finger is used to rotate the ball and the thumb
and 3rd finger work the buttons. The 2nd finger can be used
along with the 1st to rotate the ball, but it's not essential.
Finger control of the cursor is a lot more precise than
arm movement with a mouse.
One big advantage over a mouse is that the cursor stays where
you put in when you take your finger off the ball.... so for
something like a NEXT button when looking through photos you
just keep hitting the thumb button.
The arm/wrist is always rested on the contours of the
Trackman body which is a very comfortable position.

I use a Wacom Bamboo, picked it up New for around £45 with the view to a larger one later, TBH, it is excellent, I don't intend getting a larger version as this does everything, went for just the pen version as a lot of the feedback reckoned that the " touch " picked up the wrist movements as well as the pen's
Went with the advice and I find it superb for closer control on PS, still use the mouse for normal PC stuff, but you can have both plugged in and choose either.
