Upload Image Size ?.

Help please.

Is there a maximum or minimum, image file size, for uploading to this site. I have searched the site but unable to find any info regarding this. Sorry if the information is on site, and I have not found same. I have found the info, regarding the number of images. Unable to understand the forum search, procedure, so this question may have been asked / posted before.

Having been a member of, Pentax User for some time, I have never uploaded any images to the gallery, or to any other on line site, as I have a rubbish /slow, broadband connection, due to slow telephone exchange in area, not going to get any better any time soon, as exchange is not even on the due list of updates.

So getting, prepared, just in case and trying to learn how to upload images, to on line sites, I know this is as easy as falling off a log for most people, but if you are not computer savvy, it takes time.
Also, I am not the right age to be learning new tricks.

Sorry, a simple question turned into a rambling post.

Many thanks.

The norm for this site is 800 pixels on the long side. This has been mentioned numerous times in various posts.

So the advice is to upload images with 800 pixels maximum, and include a link to the full size original if required.
Best regards
Terry

Uploading or linking?

If you upload a photo here the Gallery automatically resize it right to 800px?

As for forum posts, if you link a photo there it's automatically resize to 800px horizontally but it's not wise to upload full res. photos on to the web because it slows it down quite a lot and there is no need to have such a large photos.
I use 1024px or 900px on the long side and use 60% JPG quality, a higher jpg quality is not needed and will only increase the file size without gaining any noticeable details in the photo.

The instructions are found at the top of the Your Photos forum.

Generally, it's best to use 800 pixels as a maximum if you link an image into a post. You will compromise quality if the forum software does it for you, or you may stretch the forum size to the inconvenience of everyone.

As for the Gallery, I use the same size as my e2 EPZ photos, 1000 pixels on the longest side. Any more is a waste and just wastes time loading images. Very large files may refuse to upload anyway.

Photos don't automatically resize to 800pixels in the forum Stefan. There are quite often wider ones posted - but they throw the forum out of kilter. So 800 wide for the forum, but the gallery resizes them automatically if you want it to.

Use a medium jpeg quality too as a high quality isn't needed.

Don't rely on the likes of Photobucket resizing your photos. Always do it yourself.

But that's not the forums fault, it's the web-browser that you're using that is making the mess

If you use chrome, opera or firefox then everything is okay but if you use IE you need to look at the compatibly mode.

It doesn't matter what causes the problem, it can be solved by following the instructions and limiting the size to 800 pixels.

I use Firefox Stefan, and some photos which are too big do throw it out of kilter, whether on the tiny netbook screen or my main PC.

As John says stick to 800 and there are no problems. Provide a link to the bigger picture if you want to.

Yes off course but if you're active on different forums and they all have different rules you end up converting your photo for each forum and that's quite a lot of work if you've several photo's.
It's not just the converting but also the uploading and linking.

For forums i mostly use 900px with high compression and i've heard nobody complain about it.

Why don't you just use the smallest size i.e. 800px and submit that to the other forums as well?

I agree with Gwyn the listing can become a horrible mess if an image is shown wider than 800px.

There is a way of inserting a link to a larger size which loads in another tab when the 800px image is clicked.

Because i did got comments that my pictures weren't large enough

I normally use the html code (img width=800) that will force it to 800px and work almost all the time for all browsers but that code isn't supported on this forum.

I've only just discovered that you can link to pics wider than 800. This saves creating 800 copies specifically for here and allows people to click on the pic to see the full size copy.

For example

Many thanks to all, for your information, much appreciated for your time.

I will stick with 800 pixels, but how many mb do I use or what quality camera setting do I use to obtain 800 pixels, looking at a number of my image files, I would say the average size is around 23mb.

Also in a number of the above posts, there is a mention of linking files, what does this mean, and does it have to be done every time you upload files.

Sorry if I am being a bit dim, but its starting to all look a bit complicated for my non computer brain.

As I said in my original post, the words old dog, new tricks, and unable, are appropriate.

Many thanks again.
