Upgrade Path advice wanted

I am thinking about upgrading my current ist DL2 to either a new K200D or perhaps a good quality 2nd hand K10D. From what I see here in the forum a large number of you have the K10D and are extremely happy with it. Not being either a professional or even a gifted amateur I cannot justify a K20D.

I think I know what the answer will be - look for a good used K10D - but opinions would be welcome.

The ist DL2 is going to my daughter as it is a good intro to the world of DSLR as it has been for me.

Either would be a good step up for you.... the K200D is definitely a more substantial machine than the DL2, but I can vouch for the quality of the K10D, a magnificent and beautiful machine...

Check out SRS they often have batches of 'previously enjoyed' K10Ds.

Enjoy!

SRS seems to have at least one of these in stock at the moment.

"Previously enjoyed" shouldn't be interpreted as quite the same as "second hand". Have a look at the SRS definition of "refurbished".

"Previously not enjoyed", would seem a bit more accurate, actually.

The advantage of going for the K200D would be that all your batteries and other bits and pieces would be compatible and the only thing that would change is the camera body.

The K10D uses a LiIon battery pack, but this does mean more shots per charge. Otherwise, the differences are small and may well not be significant to you.

I would happily use either.
Best regards, John

Hi John,

the advantages of the K200D are many, AA support, SDM support, I could go on and on and on and on...

I think the K10D may be a step up in many ways (Hyper program shift), depends on how happy Martin is with the features and handling of his DL2 (I liked my DL, but it had to go to make room for the K10D), whether he wants to remain with a familiar set up or go for something more advanced....

I agree, Martin would be very pleased with both

Well, the '10 has SDM support.

Personally I couldn't do without both e-dials now that I'm used to having two so I wouldn't go for the '200 over the '10 on those grounds alone.

But the small size of the '200 does appeal, as it did with the '100.

How's the dynamic range of the '200, compared with the '10?

Dynamic range should be the same as they have the same sensor.

Thanks for confirming this. I thought I'd read as much, but wasn't sure.

They have the same sensor, but the processing is different. Apparently, the K200D is less noisy at high ISO than the K10D.

Martin, we're not too far away and use a K20 & a K10, not to mention we also have a K10 for sale! You could always come over and have a try (and bring some cash just in case!)

Very true, BUT, the K10D requires the 1.30 firmware to enable full SDM functionality. I guess the K200D, like the K20D, is SDM-enabled straight from the factory.

And yes, I do like the two wheel operation of the K10 (like the *ist D and the Z-1/Z-1p)

but the K200D has HDR mode, which in theory should give you an extra stop or so when it's enabled.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help
