Kris, I imagine the second image as a gritty hi-contrast abstract one, cropped square. The slight halo of light around the thorn is handy and can be improved on too, in this respect. Nice image.

I like both shots very much. For the thorn, I can't decide about the increased saturation of the second version, but I do like the contrasty B&W one - how does it look if the noise is turned down just a tad?

Nice shots Kris! Thorn one for me, the bump in levels helped (but perhaps it was a tiny bit too much?).
I don't know if the BW helps. The grain is a bit strong for my taste, plus the original only really has two contrasting colours anyway so not sure if BW is doing much extra.

The first conversion was using one of Silver Efex 3200 film presets. This one is the Delta 400 preset. Contrast then enhanced using curves in PS.I like both shots very much.
