Kelly

Ned Kelly was a 'bushranger' in southern New South Wales and in Victoria in the late 19th century. He became notorious for various things, not the least of which was the armour he and his gang made for themselves to use in the inevitable showdown, which happened at 'The Siege of Glenrowan'. You may have seen a Time Team episode where the hotel at Glenrowan (burnt down during the siege) was the site of an archaeological dig.

Some images of parts of the Kelly gang's armour:

I love these shots - excellent monochrome pics; you can really see the texture on that iron. 3, 4 and 5 are the gems for me - 4 and 5 especially. Like something from the Day the Earth Stood Still...

Great stuff

These shots bring history alive, they are all great.

Really like the 1st and 4th (crop the bottom of the 4th maybe?). Great details, in the 1st one the nuts and bolts really make the shot. And the backlit eye hole in 4 is great. Nicely done

Thanks Mat, Col and Tim,

Any thoughts on this crop of No 4 Tim?

Looks good iBerg! It's better like this, IMHO, framed around the helmet and eyehole. I'm not sure if you needed to keep a bit of the edge of the arm hole or not. I think not (but not sure )

These have real menace, Ian. I'd no idea Kelly's armour still existed. Good, strong conversions.

Great set all round and very nice conversions indeed.

An interesting introduction, i-berg. Makes me want to see more, and of the whole suit.

I do find it difficult to appreciate the photos this size, does anyone else?

I really like the metallic edge the B+W conversion gives to these shots. My favourite is the uncropped version of the one with the light in the visor, it really adds drama to the shot, if that makes sense.

Have you read The True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey? It's a fantastic read, tellin ght story from the viewpoint of Ned Kelly as he would have written it (he was semi-literate)
