Sorry, but I don't fully understand the problem!
What do you mean "locked when in manual mode"?
Do you mean you can't adjust the settings? If you are using the grip then make sure that one of the e-dials on the grip hasn't stopped "half-click" - when this happens it prevents the e-dial working on the body.

Does this happen with the K20D and grip as well?If you are using the grip then make sure that one of the e-dials on the grip hasn't stopped "half-click" - when this happens it prevents the e-dial working on the body.

Drives me mad sometimes.

I was taking maco shots in manual when the dial to alter the speed would only go up to 30" and no further. The camera tells me I am in TV shift mode when I swithch it on. I am not sure what you refer to when you talk about the grip. The dials seem to be free. I'm just perplexed.

don't know what I did or if I did anything. I did go into the green button setting in the Custom mode and altered the setting to Programme Line and after a few tries it has all come back to how it was. Guess I will avoid that green button like the plague. Thanks for your interest, Matt. Have you any experience of a split screen focus aid? Have read much but there seems to be varying opinions. I would like the KatsEye but not at their price. Are the cheap versions from down under worth risking??

30" is 30 seconds which is the slowest shutter speed!
Turn the wheel the OTHER WAY
Keep turning it (clockwise looking down) and it will eventually go without the double quote ". When that happens you are in 1/30 all the way up to 1/4000.
(Yes it does happen with the K20D. It has the same grip )

Ronald, what do you mean with program line and the green button (the connetion to each other).
I've a K10D though but it's quite similar.
You've the in Custom menu:
Program line, which controlls the settings in the full automatic modes.
- Normall is... normall, I've no idea to be honest.
- Hi speed, Programs favors higher shutterspeeds.
- Depth, favors small aperters.
- MTF (Modulation Transfer Function), Favors optimum aperture settings for the best image quality.
Green Button in TAv & M, it controlls how the green button works in TAv and M.
- Program line, set the settings to program line exposure, see the above and which one you have chosen. It also means it adjust the aperture and the Shutter time.
- Tv shift, sets the correct shutter time to your sellected aperture.
I love this mode, it's a short of on the button Av mode.
- Av shift, it sets the right aperture to your sellected shuttertime.
In think you had set your green button to Tv shift. With macro work you've very little light to begin with and if you use a big aperture then 30 seconds isn't enough. This what happend I believe.
If you have it in program line it also adjust the aperture so the camera set it on a smaller aperture so that the shuttertimes drops.
Normally you can always adjust everything though but like Matt said, 30seconds is the max.

The manual does indeed reveal the answer to many mysteries!

And so will I Nathan..If You read my first post you will see that I stated that I had READ THE MANUAL but still could not sort out the problem and I still am not sure why I could not use the wheel to adjust the settings. The manual states page 158..TV Shift.."The apperature is LOCKED and the shutter speed is adjusted automatically" hence my first statement that the aperature was locked and I did not know how to release this. Seems that I need to go into the menu and change to Programme Line. at least, that is how I think that the aperture is now unlocked. If you read the manual differently, then please educate me..but don't accuse me of not reading the manual..This response can lead to people being offended.

Ronald, It doesn't lock the aperture it works like Av mode, it adjust the shuttertime according to the aperture when you press the green button. I've used it thousands of times and it never locked to aperture.

Ok, Apologies.
I will try and explain, and will later reiterate the point that all this information is indeed in the manual.
AV Mode - APERTURE PRIORITY - Allows the user to set a given aperture (f-stop), and the camera will establish the correct time for the exposure of the scene. In this mode you can ONLY select the aperture, and therefore do not have the possibility of selecting a different TIME from the one automatically selected by the camera."THE TIME IS LOCKED"

In this mode you can ONLY select the TIME, and therefore do not have the possibility of selecting a different aperture from the one automatically selected by the camera."THE APERTURE IS LOCKED"
I hope this has clarified your doubts.
If you have any more specific questions about how a specific MODE works in a specific way, please don't hesitate to ask, and many members will be happy to help, with advice (Kinder than mine ) and suggestions.
Kind Regards,
