A couple of quick edits to remove real names where the member does not wish them to be used.

Another vote for Redsnapper here. They are fast developing a very good reputation for quality and build that far exceeds the price point.

I too have the RS-284 with ball head and I can testify that it really is a fantastic bit of kit.
I'm thinking of ordering the Red Snapper ball head, am I right in thinking it has a friction adjustment knob?
Yes it does Robbie.

Just another thing to cogitate. Do you have a remote shutter release to go with the tripod?

You can get a remote shutter release, either wired or wireless, to use with a tripod, or use the 2 second delay in the menu.

Not wired though, at least not for the K-M or the K-X since they don't have the socket I believe.

I have a cheap IR remote release for my K-m, but for things like landscapes the 2sec self timer will work just as well.

Take a look at the Velbon CX-640. Weighs a liitle over 1.8Kg, comes with own bag, has a bubble level built in (not enormous, but functional) and will take a 4kg payload. It's quite compact, so won't be a problem to carry about + it fits into a normal suitecase. SRS have it for £45 inc VAT (and postage to PU members).

Tripods aren't something you will drag along everytime you go out with a camera, so its a good entry level contender which won't break the bank. Use SRS's web site to look at what's about - you need something which has the capacity to cope with your current kit and a bit more so it won't be useless if you get that big heavy zoom you'd like (unless it's a SMC K 135-600 - then you'll need a crane :lol

Another vote here for the Velbon CX-640.
Steve's description is spot-on, and I've been happily using mine for over a year with my then K100D and now Kx.

Golden rule of tripods:

Cheap
Light
Stable

You can pick any two.

With that in mind...

I bought a Red Snapper RS-284 for £49 (brand new off their website). It comes complete with a free 3-way head (which I am going to replace with a ball head) and bag.

The tripod comes in at just under 2kg which sounds a lot compared to some, but the bag is really well designed and carries the weight really well making it feel lighter. It is very well made (as good as a Manfrotto XPRO190B in my opinion) and more than sturdy for my needs (nothing too extreme, but still varied and frequent use).

Head wise, it's a matter of personal preference. If you value fine adjustment then get a 3 way head, otherwise a ball head will drive you less mad (in my opinion). I would also say a quick release plate is essential (attaches to the bottom of your camera allowing you to simply clip the camera on and off the tripod head).

If this tripod is as good as the 190 XPro B from Manfrotto, then it would be worth considering - the Manfrotto is the one I use.

Robbie points out that there is another side to this coin though - the head. I have a ball head with a QR plate, and as a personal preference wouldn't want to go down the path of the 3-way adjust heads. Too much fiddling, slowing you down.

So - the stability has to be provided by the tripod, but the functionality and flexibility by the head and QR plate. Both obviously contribute to weight and price.

PS - Watch the centre column - while it may look impressive to have it wound up, they get seriously unstable and can vibrate if raised too much. So don't rely on that to get you the height you need.

PPS - Camera backpacks with a tripod carrier on the (out)-side are available, and that is the path I have chosen to cart it around with the rest of my gear.

PPPS - Not everyone likes tripods with metal feet or (non-retractable) spikes on their floor surfaces!

Sorry for the long post.

Got a manfrotto 190 in aluminium and love it. Tried the 3 way magnesium head and it was OK but now settled on their mini ball head which suits me well. QR plates are definitely the way forward. CF tripod would be lovely if I ever decide I can justify the cost.

handle, centre lock, geared centre, quick release legs, hook on the centre column to add weight if required

as you can see by the dust on it it's not been used for a while
but at £25.00 I will throw the dust in for free.
