Actually, I use Google as little as possible (usually use Yahoo/Altavista) but you could well be right!Your computer belongs to Google!
OTOH, could be the AVG A/V that I use - having had to dump a lot of other packages (esp Zonealarm) because they completely stop me accessing the Synology backup NAS on our network at home network!
K-3 II, K-3 and a K-70 from SRS (having now relegated the K-30 /"K-50" to a backup body), & some Sigma and Pentax lenses (and a lot of old 35mm gear!)

Click on the little cogwheel at the top-right of your browser window. This opens the TOOLS section. Next, select TRACKING PROTECTION. This opens up MANAGE ADD-ONS window. Select GET A TRACKING PROTECTION LIST ONLINE in the left-hand pane. A new internet window (www.iegallery.com) opens up - simply select a tracking protector from the list. I use EASYLIST.MSIE ADBLOCKPLUS.

Firefox under Tools/Options Privacy has a tick box marked
Tell websites I do not want to be tracked
Seems to be off by default...... there's been an uproar
from advertisers over MS turning it ON by default on
the next IE (possibly Windows 8 ).

Almost right, Algi - IE10 (which will launch with WIN8 ) will have that feature. I like the EU policy on cookies, but it could go further by forcing the script kiddies to give us individual options within tracking cookies, for example, online newspapers could offer an option to provide news stories (similar to rss feeds) on specific football teams, but a seperate option to bar 3rd-parties (let's say Adidas, Nike, JJB Sports, etc) from bombarding us with discount vouchers for sports kit, and the like.

The problem really is that sites like this can only make money from advertisements. If everyone blocks adverts and websites cannot make money they will either cease to be or have to charge everyone.

Up to a point, I do agree with you - but when you get the same cookies appearing EVERY time you access a page (often multiple times in a few minutes) then that is absolutely OTT and will drive "non-dedicated" visitors away PDQ, and that was happening here.The problem really is that sites like this can only make money from advertisements. Thankfully, Steve's tip has resulted in a massive reduction in the problem already!

Adverts are brain rot. I block them using Adblock Plus.

I get Facebook and Twitter cookies and I never go
on either and have Noscript blocking their scripts.
I also have a load of sites blocked in the HOSTS file.
I even have a cookie called accounts.google.com
What's that about Are they going to start charging
me

As I see it, tracking protection offers a sort of compromise. You will still see ads on the sites - they just won't be "random attacks" based upon some cookies already installed in the user's browser.
