Its great the way that the light has caught the exhaust, making it the highlight, both the drama of it and in an exposure sense.
(BTW did you notice how I used the term 'exhaust', thereby avoiding any "smoke / steam" debates! )

Cheers. I was happy with the smoke (I'm pretty sure it is smoke from the firebox, the steam is used in driving the wheels) in those, both in terms of the texture and the way it helpfully covers the not-too-nice coaches and the diesel engine on the back end.
They're both quite heavily cropped so there's a limit to how large they can be. I will update a larger one when I get a minute - I usually scale them down to save bandwidth.

The exhaust consists of both steam(from the cylinders after doing the work in driving the pistons) and smoke from the fire, drawn through the boiler tubes) The exact science of how the exhaust steam from the blast pipe(s) entrains the gases and smoke from the fire and exits up the chimney(s) causing draught air to be pulled into the firebox is complex and still open for debate despite modern impovements in computer modelling!

As usual, any comments or criticism welcome. I think these worked a little better than the shots of Galatea from last week, as I've tried to keep the ISO down a bit more. I had a go at cloning out the wires in the second shot, but it didn't go well so I left them in. And those marks are birds, not a dirty lens.
I did catch Oliver Cromwell - after Chester, it came back to Crewe, and then through Nantwich and off again. Unfortunately it was totally dark by then, so you can imagine the results of no flash, hand-held and 16.57 through the station. If I figure out a way to turn them from "rubbish" to "atmospheric", I'll post one somewhere.
