Hi Mate,

I was at an out door food thingy and this was the pan they cooked the spetzl in (I think thats what its called) Doughy stuff you get with a Goulash. The Goulash its self was all up front in those heated trays like school dinners used to be in.

Like the lighting, love the rising steam (not as easy to capture as you think), like the flames. DoF is well controlled to isolate the subject whilst still keeping it completely in focus. The composition is a bit too central for my taste. If it had been framed to include a bit more space on the left, and that space was filled by a cook's hand on the handle, and perhaps a bit of the chef's apron then it would have added a bit more context to the scene.

May I just ask out of interest do you feel it would be imporved with a bit more contrast? I ask as I am never sure just how much contrast to add and this to me looks just a tad flat.

Nice colours and I'm impressed by the flames and steam as well.

Mike,

I had the same feeling at work (a bit more contrast needed). Looking at it at home it's fine. Judging by the histogram it should be fine as well.

Nice capture, Paul! The cloth in the foreground does somehow distract me a bit, but I think without it it would look less authentic. The Spätzle (and I think that is what we see in the pan) are a bit too bright (but as the rest is pretty well balanced I guess there was not a lot you could have done here).

Regarding the composition I think Duncan has made some valid points...
