To switch or not to switch

I only have one sdm lens and I would estimate its done around 60-70000 shots over the last 4 years and never had an issue with it.

I think what happens when an expensive item fails we now tend to google faults to see if they can be resolved. Google pentax sdm failure and you will find a list of links to various forums where people discuss this. This then creates a feeling of commonality when in reality it is probably a small number of the user base suffering with the sdm failure.

If mine was to fail now I would just pay for the repair.

The simple way round is to use the 16-45mm combined with the 55-300mm, leaving lots of change from £1200. I doubt very much that anyone would notice any technical difference in practice between those lenses and more expensive ones. Technique and skill will have far more effect on the outcome.
If I couldn't afford my suggested lineup then yes I would be more than happy with the 16-45mm and 55-300mm but at the end of the day I would guess 99% of us would blow the full £1200 on what would only get us a small increase in image quality at best.

Why is that I wonder ...

Thanks very much for all the replies, I think I have a better understanding of my options now.

I am still very tempted but have decided to wait a little longer to see if Olympus announce a new solution which suits the lenses I already have, I really am quite wedded to the high grade ones.

I'll probably change my mind again tomorrow

[quote:3496ace15f="Mike-P"]If I had £1200 to spend and wanted to cover a decent range I would be looking at the Pentax DA 17-70mm f4 and DA* 60-250mm f4.

Jules has both for sale in the used section so you would have enough left to source a prime (depending on focal length)

Both superb lenses.
Agree entirely with Mike about the DA17-70, brilliant zoom lens which IMHO stands up well against all but the very best Pentax primes (mainly FA 31mm Ltd)

Simon
The 17-70 is a good lens, but it is surpassed by the 16-50, which really is nearly as good as the best primes (which means the FA Limiteds, and one or two others).

Yes I agree that the 16-50mm is better than the 17-70mm in most areas but the question was:

Quote:
The question confounding me is if I can get a zoom set up, covering 24-400 ish (full frame equivalent) with superb sharpness, low ca etc. together with an excellent prime or two for around £1200 which is what I will have to spend.
With those requirements as I see it the only way to do that is with the 17-70mm, even second hand I doubt a 16-50mm/60-250mm/prime combo could be done for £1200.[/quote]Point taken. I was simply pointing out that there other lenses which comfortably surpass the "brilliance" of the 17-70, and which are not primes.

Nonetheless, I do consider the 17-70 to be a fine lens.

I've never had a SDM failure either. I have a 17-70 and a 60-250 and am on my second 50-135 (having foolishly sold the first one).
Hello Gwyn,
i see you bought a new 50-135 then? I was foolish enough to sold your old 50-135 too , although I was amazed by it and had no trouble whatsoever with SDM failure nor SDM speed and focus accuracy. On contrary I found it more reliable than screw drive autofocus of lets say FA77. The only problem was that the lens was little too big for me on K-5. But it is excellent lens optically and probably I will annoy some FAlimited fans but I find it more than equal to FA77. I can wholeheartly recommend this lens to anybody.

Hi spooner,
didn't Olympus recently announce the new 4/3 dslr..upgrade to E-5? I would like to see Olympus back at SLR business

There was an announcement that they were were working on an upgrade which would solve the problem of using their hg/shg lenses on current models, they aren't designed to work on the current mirror-less micro 4/3 cameras.

This is my problem.

If a body with the image quality of the new omd existed which could take the lenses I have got I would be considering a swap, at the moment there is nothing beyond a vague statement, nothing has come out at photokina.
