Was the solarised effect deliberate? The first one in particular looks like the white end of the histogram has had its output reduced. They all look a little grey at the white end.

Thanks for having a look Mark .... no deliberate effects, just a 'convert to greyscale' command and normal level-type tweaking. I did reduce bring the white point down on the skies to allow the castle walls more prominance - perhaps too much? The originals were only just clipped on the right. I will restore a bit of white and see if that improves things
