No you are right, it is odd looking. We saw one landing in France last year, just outside Ablert. My old company supplied material to Airbus at Chester so we were able to have a factory tour. The A380 wings are built on edge but they are so wide they had to build a sunken pit to fit them under the factory roof. We also saw them loading the Beluga (named after the whale I think) with the wings on edge, hence the shape.

The Airbus A300 ST is a regular visitor to the Airbus Industrie Factory at Broughton.
I was fortunate enough several years ago, when I worked there, to be allowed access to the cargo deck. It is enormous,and felt as if I was standing in a cathedral. The cargo door is, I believe, the largest door ever constucted for an aircraft and may only be opened under relatively mild wind conditions.
Mind you the earlier transport aircraft the consortium used, the "Super Guppy" which operated from Manchester Airport was a far stranger looking beast in my opinion, especially when loading, as the whole of the front of the aircraft hinged.
The Aircraft transports A320 and A330/340 wings, though the A380 wings are too large and they travel via the Dee and Mostyn Docks, thence by sea and road to Tolouse. Specialist Barges and Ferries have been built for the purpose.

Look for the "Guppy" and "Super Guppy" They're american planes that were used to carry oversize cargo. They were used way before the "Beluga".

I must admit I always stop my golf and stare in awe when it comes past Sandfield Golf Course on a Wednesday - it almost looks as though it has stalled at times !
The one below tickles me too - I call it a push me pull you as it flies over the Jersey coast on its way from Guernsey.

That was the old car transporter that plyed its way across from England to France,Jersey and the IOM - I think it was BEA Bristol Superfreighter .

Above is one of the aircraft that Airbus use to ferry wings from their site just outside Chester to the over assembly sites across Europe.
Have not seen an odder looking aircraft.
