The Lakes at the weekend

Well I went to the lakes at the weekend but was ill typical very rarely get a weekend off and that happens but hey ho still managed to get few pics but left the isos on 1600 for everything I was poorly

Beautiful - Ansel Adams would have struggled to better it. Lovely sharp contrasty B&W image with oodles of depth of field.

the light and contrast is spot on but I would of liked it a bit sharper

What lens did you use and did you use a tripod ??

I liked your beach with the tall grass and wooden pathway you have a great eye.

It was sharper in original seems to have lost abit uploading no tripod couldnt carry it around was aching just wanted to go home to be honest I also didnt want to carry around all my lenses so only took the 18-55 out on camera with circular polariser attached. Thankyou

Looks like you had similar weather to last week, I was there doing some hiking.

I like the conversion but must admit I'm not 100% sure on the composition, the foreground rock looks a bit lonely on its own and feels a bit out of place tucked into the corner - just my thoughts

I quite liked the single rock thats what drew me to that composistion also the ducks swimming past not that that stick out as much as I had hoped in the conversion but if everyone agreed we would all have the same photos hey Was lovely place I have never been before.

Hi Emma, my copy of the 18-55 (Mk I) renders soft images as well, even when it's stopped down. You may have been experiencing the effects of diffraction at f19 as well? But at 1600 ISO, you were going to get that, or fast shutter speeds, or both...

I can't let this pass. I'm pretty sure AA would have done better on all counts, the edge of the hill is too pronounced, one cloud is burnt out, the hill side is rather dark to no real purpose, the composition has already been questioned. Nor would AA be guilty of using the wrong film (ISO 1600).

Over stated praise does no-one any favours and devalues the currency of the meaningful critique. There has been a tendency of late to lavish gushing praise right and left where some thoughtful appraisal of the shot would be more helpful to the photographer and viewers as we can all learn from one another.

I am not suggesting that you are guilty of this (although in this case IMO you are) but I find it a depressing trend and have taken this opportunity to raise it.

All of course IMO only and no offence intended to anyone.

Blimey, Emma. Likened to the great Ansel Adams. That's praise indeed. Considering how ill you were, the lack of time and the pressure to get some decent shots in changing, challenging light, this is a most pleasing set. Nicely converted, too. You are developing an eye for landscape composition.

And testimony to that extraordinary camera which can turn-in this sort of performance at 1600ASA. This won't be the last time any of us makes such an error (I'm keeping most of mine a secret, except for the time I toured France with a half-frame camera in which I'd managed to mis-load a 36 exposure film!)

Mike, I thought this site was for constructive criticism to help photographers better their shots, if you are unable to give constructive criticism please do not give negative comments as everyone has a different point of view and perspective of how an image should look we do not all look through the same eyes! There is no need to be negative and rude about mine or anyone elses photos remember alot of us are just enthusiasts and just enjoy taking pictures as a hobby and your comments can make or break someones efforts and discourage them from taking any photos ever again. So please take a minute and think about the detrimental effects your words have on individuals.

I'm sure it is very flattering to be compared to a 20th century Master like Adams but most of Mike's comment wasn't directed at you Emma. He was remarking on Cayman's post which well intended suggests to me that he, Cayman, may only have seen reproductions of AA's work because if you ever saw an original print you might be of the opinion that no one could ever, ever come close.

I'm afraid that if you post here you have to take the good with the bad and I see nothing at all rude in Mike's comments.

I also support Mike in both his analysis of the photo, comparisons to AA, and the utility of uncritical commentary. In my view his remarks are highly constructive.

In posting images on public forums shouldn't we be prepared to take the rough with the smooth and, invariably, learn more from the former?

I all so agree with all that been said and we should be ready for criticism that's why we post our images?? isn't it

I am not denying the fact that good criticism is helpful but I feel Mikes comments do not help at all and actually come across and being rude. I no I am definatley no AA or anyone close but sometimes its nice to here that some of your work is actually not half bad.
