My partner has bought (after some gentle persuasion) the K-m (from Gales cameras in Woodford- very helpful, I have no connection). A nice camera, small and light and does the business. She was going to buy in our local Jessops- it's in their new catalogue and on their website. But Pentax tells me that they are definitely not supplying Jessops with the model. And a chap in Cameraworld told me that Jessops will not be selling any more Pentax product. After a quick look in a branch yesterday he could well be right- not a single Pentax model on display.
So....why? And isn't this bound to be detrimental to Pentax?
I was unable to view the K20D in my area, and when I walked into the Jessops store in Basildon Essex, to ask if they stocked the K20D, I was told " no we don't stock it and it's only for special order only"My partner has bought (after some gentle persuasion) the K-m (from Gales cameras in Woodford- very helpful, I have no connection). It's a shame that Photo Optix has gone to the wall, and it would appear that Larry Morgan, at Brentwood Essex never see a Pentax rep any more, according to Neil the owner!
I am left wondering, if it is a turn over issue, and if Pentax feel that their products are not selling in sufficient quantities?

Camera World in Chelmsford tend to have stock of Pentax stuff, much better than they were a year ago. They had the K20D and K-m in the other day, as well as the refurbished K100D for £199. Some secondhand lenses too, not sure what new lenses they have in stock though.

Went to Manchester Trafford centre last weekend and had a mooch in Jessops while the good lady went off doing her thing (spending my hard earned). No Pentax stuff anywhere to be seen, the guy in there told me they are not doing Pentax any more, didn't say why.

I tried to buy a k20d from Jessops in Derby, it was a 10 day delivery, no doubt minimum. Also tried Jacobs as they had it on their website with the 16-50 as a kit lens but was told at the derby branch that it was unavailable with the 16-50 even to order. A call to the tele sales said that it was available with that lens but on a 10 day order.
I went to SRS.
I have heard 3rd hand from a pentax manager that Nikon and Canon (and I imagine Sony) supply all the displays free of charge. Pentax refuse to do this so they don't stock them.

There is a rumour mentioned in this weeks Amateur Photographer magazine that Jessops are looking to hook up exclusively with one large manufacturer although Jessops deny this.
The article mentioned Jessops has strong links with Canon though, rather than Sony.
I wonder...

Next time you are in Tokyo you should visit Bic Camera
http://www.biccamera.co.jp/shoplist/index_english.html
I have used their Shinjuku and Ginza stores. I got my *istD there 2 or 3 months before they were available in the UK and the price was excellent.
They quoted me a total price for, Body, Lens, Memory Cards, Filters and then broke them down to component prices (same total).
I bought the body and got an large number of loyalty points. then I used those points towards the lens and amassed more points, which were used against the memory cards, then the filter ... So the deal was even better.
Also, if you have your passport and return ticket or flight itinerary with you then they do not add sales tax to the items either.

I think they'd have to be completely bonkers to drop Nikon at the moment - perhaps though they're looking to completely self-destruct.There is a rumour mentioned in this weeks Amateur Photographer magazine that Jessops are looking to hook up exclusively with one large manufacturer although Jessops deny this.

I agree Dan, especially as Nikon has overtaken canon as best selling brand now.
With Sony's aggressive marketing though it won't be long until they are top. Even if their cameras don't always match their hype.

On a similar anecdotal theme when in Japan my son took me to the photographic area and the main shops seemed to have large stocks of Pentax. While I didn't look for them I am quite confident they had all the lenses so it's not all gloom and doom for Pentax but the UK does seem to lack real drive in promoting what seem to be very competent cameras.
I bought my K100D as after a modest review of entry level DSLR it seemed to offer the best bang for buck ratio. Now I have a few lenses I can't see why I'd bother to change and I'm struggling to think that the quality offered by a K10 will fall short of my needs. I have yet to try really large prints but I suspect they'll be fine. My daughter is currently negotiating the use at cost of her employer's printer that does A0 plus prints which would be interesting.

On the recommendation of a works colleague (Japanse) I went to Fujiya Camera in Nakano, Tokyo and the choice in there was bewildering. I had in mind the three FA limiteds (new) but bought a used 77 mm (the 31mm came from SRS for the same money:shock, but there were 3 (yes, 3) used FA* 200 f2.8s for 91,000 yen each....I am waiting for my next meeting in Japan.
