The competition

Can someone point me to the thread on the forum that announced this weeks competition as I cannot find it and wasn't aware the new one had started?

Also, how do I enter the competition if I don't want to upload a photo to this site for copyright reasons (i.e. keeping control of the images that I publish) and only want to link to a photo as before?

I've posted the same questions on the competition as there seems to be no link between the forum and the competition anymore for some reason.

There also needs to be a closing time as well as date on competitions as it's ambiguous as it stands as to when on the day it closes.

Also, if I publish to a competition how will I be able to remove a photo afterwards if I want to for copyright reasons, especially since I only have a pathetically short time to delete posts.

I'm also confused as to why the competition is now completely separated from the forum when the whole supposed reason for this mess is that it's meant to be integrated now?

I also cannot find a list of moderators like on normal forums so that I can PM one, where is it?

Well I think you know your moderators by now Chirpy! If you need help, just ask. Moderators are now labelled as such on the ID panel along with their Avatar by the title "Pentax User Team"

I can see one advantage straight away to the new competition gallery section - you can upload your image directly without having to use Photobucket and linking. It also removes the problem of image sizes.

If anyone wanted to remove an image, then just let us know and that can be arranged. It does also ensure of course that immages are not replaced in the light of sibsequent entries and that only one image is posted. It was never much of a problem, but it does clinch it.

I'm intrigued by the prospect that anyone would want to remove an image for copyright reasons though. What sort of thing did you have in mind where this would be an issue? I would expect that anyone posting an entry posted their own work and hence owned the copyright. :

It seems removing a photo from the competition is possible. I did yesterday, after noticing a hick-up in the used color space. So I deleted it, and reentered with the corrected version. This was done after 20 minutes and after the fact two others had posted.All this seems logical, because the PUF is allowing uploading and therefore acts like a photo host like Flickr or Photobucket.

That's great, thanks for the info. When the dust has settled I'll redo the "rules and guidance" for the benefit of any new members.

Some competitions will only take entries if the image is not 'published' elsewhere. I believe this also applies to many web sites hosting images for sale (portfolio sites?).

For example, I might post up one of my images for the competition or just in the main gallery, then see that a publishing house/competition is asking for just that type of image, to comply with the rules of publishing house/competition, I would have to take down my gallery image.

if I missed a chance at a sale/competition because I was not allowed to delete my own image on here, I would not be best pleased.

Would I be able to sue?

If you have to retract your picture from this site because of the reason you mentioned, you have 2 options AFAICT. When posted in the gallery (main gallery or competition) you can delete, with no time limit. When posted in a normal thread by hot linking, you can always kill it by deleting/or replacing it on the hosting site.

It's a bit naff to have to do this though, isn't it?

To replace a picture I post on a thread, hosted say in PhotoBucket, I have to

- delete that picture
- upload the new one with another of exactly the same name.

, otherwise, because I can't edit the post, the link will be broken.

Say I've got the original picture linked elsewhere - if I change it in the host, that forces it to change wherever else I have the original linked, which I might not want to do.

All this restriction, because in their wisdom, the site owners have decided that we need to be protected from evil trolls bent on mischief. Of which, we're all agreed, there currently are none.

Why can't we just have our edit facility back for now, so that we don't have to jump through complicated hoops, in order to do the simplest things?

And then if, one day, this place becomes an anarchic, troll-ridden place where threads are being changed willy-nilly, just take it away again.

It does seem a perfectly reasonable compromise to me - no restriction while there is no problem, and then re-introduce it if in the future there is.

You know by now, we are on the same wave length here. But I see no point in repeating things. It has been said enough. I gave AJ an answer because of a specific problem that might occur.
He can choose to post only in the gallery by uploading( no problems deleting them)
or by hot linking with the risk of breaking a link. When there is money involved nobody would blame him.
