Hi - It is not very heavy, is very sharp and easily hand held. Used it on a Safari this year as it it weather/dust sealed!
As for price, I paid £900 18 months ago. I think it is now around the £1100 mark but I have not checked recently

It is a great lens. I got mine secondhand from someone changing systems, and for a bargain price too. I love it and use it often. It is one lens I wouldn't consider selling.

Fantastic lens, superb build quality and great IQ.
My problem with it is that on the K10D it is very slow to focus and so I always used the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 or 100-300mm f4.
It seems much faster on the K-5 but I have got so used to the Sigmas now I keep forgetting about the Pentax.

Agree with everyone else, great image quality. But, you're right, it is pretty heavy. I've spent the day walking around with it fitted, and you certainly notice when you take it off.
I got mine for about £750 second hand, I would baulk at paying over a grand for any lens I think.
It seems to be an ideal lentgh as well - don't see much point in going for the 300mm F4, for an extra 50mm at the long end, doesn't seem to be worth the cost vs. the flexibility of a zoom (image quality being equal). And, if you're not desperate for the wider apperture, it's a good alternative to the 50-135.
I guess it doesn't come up often because it's expensive, and never seems to drop below £700 used..

Found the 60-250mm a really excellent lens to use on the odd occasion I get to use it, usually stuck on my better half's K20D.

I don't own it so I'm not commenting based upon experience but I've read a few threads on here & the other Pentax forum where it's been suggested that it's IQ is not as good as/or at best only equal to the DA 17-70, considering the price difference it could be a possible reason for it's apparent lack of popularity??

However I am perfectly happy for the lens to remain known only to connoisseurs

Simon, I have both the 17-70 and the 60-250. The 60-250 is far superior to the 17-70 imho.

The Pentax SMC DA* 60-250mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM is a highly desirable long tele zoom lens with only minor weaknesses (except QC maybe). It is very sharp through its range and even the secondary aspects such as distortions, vignetting and lateral CAs are well controlled. While not formally tested the high quality of the bokeh (out-of-focus blur) seems to be a differentiator compared to similar lenses - long tele zoom lenses are often problematic here. The build quality is exceptionally high and up to pro standards. The AF operates virutally silent and fast (although not blazingly speedy). All-in-all a sound offer albeit a somewhat pricey one.
The DA17-70 is a very different lens though so it's strange to compare it with that one, it doesn't even have the same range.

Hmm. I wonder if you have a bad one, Gwyn. I've never owned or used a 60-250, but I do own the three proper Ltds, and a few other good lenses, and I rate the 17-70 quite highly. Certainly close to the 16-50 (RIP).
