DA*300/4, often with a rear converter Tamron-F AF 1.4x Pz-AF MC4, Teleplus 1.5x Pz-AF SHQ, 1.7x Pz-AF 1.7x SHQ. Giving 420, 450 and 510mm focal lengths.

I'm not so sure about that, it really depends on the wildlife. I've got some very good shots of birds from my DA* 50-135mm due to the fact that the images can be cropped mercilessly without losing sharpness.

A faster Tokina 80-400mm with f/4 would be a good compromise.
The Sigma xx - 500mm lenses are heavy. OK for wildlife if
you need 500mm for say birds.

I don't think there is a simple answer to choosing which lens. I voted for the Sigma 150-500mm.
There are many factors to consider when choosing.
How good is your field craft? Can you get close enough to be able to use a shorter focal length like the DA* 60-250mm or 300mm.
What's your budget? The Sigma 150-500mm is £600, the DA* 60-250 is over £1000.
Do you need it to be weather resistant? The Pentax DA*'s are, the Sigma's are not.
Maximum aperture and whether it's constant aperture in the case of a zoom.
You also need to consider the weight of the lens if you are limited to hand holding, and/or carrying it around all day.

Field craft - reasonable and improving.. but i agree with your @ how close can you get @ question ... unless I am in a Zoo or Safari park
Budget : Approx £1000
Weather resistant : I hadn't thought about that ... I suppose I do is I am outside..
Max Aperture : Now that is questionable... I honestly do not care much. I don't want to spend £3000 or so for F2.8 or something... probably something reasonable. F4 -5.6 may be
Wt : Not much of an issue
