There has been a lot of talk about teleconverter lately, so I thought a comparison might be useful.

For those who are really interested, full size images here.
For those who are new;
Pentax 1.7 af, gives auto focus at most apertures, supports SDM. Will also af manual lenses within limits. Current price around £250
Teleplus 2x MC7 pz-af, gives af on af lenses up to 4.5 depending on contrast of subject, supports powerzoom, may support SDM (not sure on this one), Current price around £60

Teleplus 2x KAF mc7, manual focus only but does support “A”, current price around £20-£25

Teleplus 2x APK mc6, fully manual, current price £5-£10

Coincidently I have the Teleplus 2x KAF for sale here

"Pentax 1.7 af, gives auto focus at most apertures, supports SDM"

My understanding is it reverts to screwdrive AF?!

You may be correct John, still waiting to get a SDM lens to confirm this point.

For me the oddest thing is if you look at the first two images of both the 300mm and 500mm the 1.7 appears closer than the 2x teleconverters. I have checked, they are in the correct order.

1.7x and 2.0x are just notional values and the TC's are from
different makers. I've already mentioned that in another thread today.

The values are only nominal anyway. They refer to an unspecified
lens (probably 50mm) at an unspecified distance 1m or infinity..
who knows. Plus as you focus a telephoto closer it's focal length
becomes less and the 1.4x focal length will vary.
Indeed you have Algi, and valid comments. I feel a proper "scientific" test coming on, was wondering what to do this Saturday

The 1.7x seems to be the clear winner, which isn't all that surprising as it's shorter than the others. A comparison with some 1.4x TCs would have been interesting

The 1.7x does not support SDM, by the way, although its screw drive is very fast compared to many lenses (including SDM ones).

I don't think thats a KAF convertor as there is no autofocus shaft
Well spotted Gareth, it is actually a KAX, must have been wishfull thinking on my part. But at least i got it right in the actual advert.
