I think most people think it is worth it so that you have full functionality of the lens. With the PK mount you can, essentially, only use the lens in manual.
I'm sure Mike will advise.
Best wishes, Kris.

For macro shots in all but the brightest light it's almost impossible to get any decent DOF shooting handheld with a normal PK adapter, because you'll have to focus wide open then turn the aperture ring by hand to stop down and it's hard/impossible to keep the camera still while you do that. So my opinion would be to get a PKA adapter as soon as possible.

Hi
With a pkm adapter you won't have to stop down to take the shot, as thoughton suggests. You use the aperture ring on the lens tu adjust aperture (it stays open, meanwhile), and you can use the green button to meter (it won't be very precise with small diafragms), and take the shot. The mayor inconveniance will be that you won't have P-TTL flash control, and that's important for macro, and metering will be off many times. Much better to get a PKA Adapter.

Thats the trouble with the Adaptall 2 Macro lenses, by the time you add a PK/A mount you are approaching AF Sigma/Tamron price territory.
Anyway, as Tim said .. Macro mostly needs a decent dof at low aperture but the ability to see what you are actually shooting ... which you don't get with a PK mount as it's too dark through the viewfinder. PK/A mount is a much better (and easier) way of doing things.

Sorry Mike & Tim I am with Nicolas on this one. You do not have to stop down, I have a K mount on my 135mm f2.5 and it works fine on my IstD.

So with a PK mount you can close the lens down to say f13 to get a decent dof (which you need for 1:1 macro) and actually see enough detail to focus on the precise spot you need?Sorry Mike & Tim I am with Nicolas on this one. You have better eyesight then me thats for sure, I should imagine its easy enough at f2.5 on a 135mm though.
Still say its a lot easier with a PK/A mount.

Not having an adaptall lens I am a bit confused. I thought the PK mount acted just like an K or M series lens, i.e., set the aperture on the lens, press the green button to meter, but it is still "auto" in the sense that the camera shuts the lens down when you take the shot. The PK/A mount makes the lens like an A series lens. I agree it must be easier with a PK/A mount, but I didn't think the ordinary PK mount made them, essentially, preset lenses?
Best wishes, Kris.

I just don't see how that's possible If you're at f13 how can you see anything through the viewfinder? Perhaps in blazing sunshine, but I just don't see how it could work in gloomier weather.
In fact I can recall a particular macro session where it did NOT work, but I might have also been using the kenko 1:1 macro TC (which would take away another 2 stops of light), and I suppose it might be possible with the lens on its own.

But surely you wouldn't be at f/13 apart from (a) when you press the green button to meter and (b) at the moment you take the picture. In any case, when using a preset lens (like my Jupiter 85mm) you focus with it wide open and just close it down to meter/shoot.
Cheers, K.

Perhaps my PK mount is rubbish (it's not a genuine Tamron one), but it definitely acts like a preset lens, there is no mechanical stop down.

I suppose a lot of this depends on if you use a tripod for macro. Personally I don't so to focus wide open and then close down to (for instance) f13 using the aperture ring for a decent dof is nigh on impossible because I would lose the precise spot I wanted to focus on. With a tripod it wouldn't make any difference as there should not be any movement.

So the PK Adaptall 2 mount doesn't have the "auto" linkages and acts as a preset lens : I surprised anyone bought them even at the time if that is the case!
Best wishes, Kris.

I suppose you didnt need a PK/A mount for the Pentax film cameras that couldn't meter using the A setting so it would be cheaper to buy the basic K mount. These mounts started with the original Adaptall 1 lenses so we are talking quite a few years ago .. they only introduced the PK/A when they released the Adaptall 2 lenses (although a very few Adaptall 1 can use them) but the basic K mount from Adaptall 1 could also be used with Adaptall 2.

I take it i need to get an adaptall2 pk mount for pentax current ebay prices between £10-20 or is it worth spending more for the adaptall pka mount which seems to be silly money at the moment?
