Well I just bit the bullet and did it.

Today I purchased a new Tamron 18-250mm Di II for my K10.

I have checked out just about every website including this one for opinions on this lens and came to the conclusion that for the most part it gets very good reviews.

Today I checked Ebay and a guy had just listed one with a Buy Now for $400.00. including a filter and shipping. Needless to say I purchased it.

Will have it next week, can't wait to try it out.

I tried one out yesterday and it seemed fine - certainly no complaints over build quality, nice and solid and no wobble even at the longest setting.

Haven't had a chance to look at the pics I took on screen yet. Noticed a fair degree of barrel distortion at 18mm, and vignetting at f/3.5-5.6 at the wide end too, but you'll tend to get this with any consumer zoom.

As a general use, walkabout lens, I reckon it's probably fantastic.

Have fun when it arrives, and obviously show us some results.

The above site has a good review and some great examples of what one can do with this lens. Check out the full size images.

I am hoping my K10 and this lens will work for me shooting for the Fire Dep't.
It will be great if I can just take one camera/lens. It's gets very tiring lugging around two lots of gear, changing lenses in a fire/smoke/water environment is just not on.

Where did you try the lens out, are you thinking of getting one ?

We have a training burn on the 8th December, which will be a huge test for this lens. I will certainly post some examples.

Cheers, RG.

Hi RG (hotshots4u2c)

Actually I am incredibly envious to discover that you have managed to secure this unique prototype-example of 'Tamron's 19-250mm Di II Pentax Mount' lens. However, I think it may be advisable for you to correct this unintentional faux-pas in the 'Subject' box of your initial post, before confusion ensues ?
Incidentally, Tamron's 18-250mm is an extremely fine optic IHO and I have thoroughly enjoyed using mine ! Happy shooting....

Best regards
Richard

Helterskelter.

Thanks for pointing that out. Sorry for the finger trouble.
Some of the images you previously pointed out from this lens is what got me going on wanting one.

Cheers, RG.

Now I feel truly awful for pointing out your original typo, but also strangely warm and wonderful inside for turning you into a Tamron convert....lol ! I just hope that the seller on e-bay proves genuine and that your new purchase works out ok.

Best regards
Richard

Helterskelter.

Received the 18-250mm Di II Tamron this morning. Looks like a well built lens.

Hope to try it today.

There has been some discussion on Forums about this lens being made in China. The one I got is made in Japan and has a metal mount. (I read somewhere the mount was plastic.)

My experience is that most modern lenses have some degree of wobble and looseness in their design. Even the 16-45 isn't completely solid and tight. Set the 16-45 to 16mm and you can move the barrel around a little bit.

Exactly why I thought it worth mentioning. For a consumer lens the Tamron is very solid indeed. I have the 16-45 and am well aware it wobbles.

If you want a lens which doesn't "wobble" get some good MF primes. The zoom action and even more so the AF will need a certain amount of "slack" to make sure they work correctly.
