i am looking to buy a second hand and wandering if there are serial numvers of this lens which are to be avoided due to some factory issues?

Never had any trouble with mine, stunning lens!

Haven't heard of any complaints from other users who have one either. What have you heard?

Asking just in case if there are older lenses which had some quality control issues. Were there any?

IIRC there were a few people that have reported duff copies (soft edges or sharper one side). This was a while back but there is no way of knowing if you have one until you have take n pictures with it.

Only real way to be safe is buy from a retailer rather than Ebay.
