Tall Ships at Blyth

I left home at 04:45 on the motorcycle to pop up to Blyth before going to Reeth. Thick fog so an interesting ride up there.

I knew about road closures etc. so getting close by car was a non starter. Rode up to the dock alongside the ships and it was obvious that due to cloud, there wasn't going to be a good sunrise. Quite a few togs about at six this morning.

So I shot ropes and masts.

Like these... different, almost abstract.

Nice, especially the last one. Well caught light. I pretty much came back with few similar shots. The website of the event did very little to clearly state the most important info and arriving at the docks with the crowds was a very 'special' experience accompanied by music so loud one could barely hear their own thoughts. Not being local, a sunrise was out of question due to all the closed car parks; even those dedicated to the event. It wasn't until the following afternoon that we found a spot we could've parked at within walking distance to the beach.

No-one at the event, or at local port authority knew and.or wanted to give out info regarding rough time frame for the ships' arrival. It took us several volunteers to finally find one that was able to say what time the parade will happen on Monday.

Next time, it's most certainly worth buying a proper ship tracking app and arranging car parking with a private resident if one can have any chance at all of seeing any of the ships, not hidden behind docks at low tide.

And last, but not least, on Friday evening, we only managed to find 11 of them. Guess it still falls into the - 'up to 30' category .

Either way, rant over. Super shots given the circumstances.

An impressive lineup of square riggers (and some others I suppose). It is a pity that the 'Tallships' events seem to get criticised again and again for chaotic lack of information.

The last one is my favourite too, I like the hint of context the ship is placed within. I tried something similar with some of my Santorini shots (not yet processed) by using the 55-300 lens to compress the perspective of the crowded buildings.
