I have had no success in photographing the moon with my K3. Whatever settings I use, I get the red overexposure blinkies in live view - even if expose to the minimum and set the lowest ISO. There must be something that I am doing wrong. Any ideas please?

If you flick to manual (and set a specific ISO, NOT a range) then there will be no metering by the camera, and you should be able to adjust the shutter speed to something quicker.

Here's my not particularly impressive "Super-Moon" - I couldn't see it at MoonRise so just tried out the new set-up to see what the quality was like....

Not bad image - looking at the original! Got some detail still present on the circumference of the moon

Well I used F11 at 1/100th sec on ISO 100 on my K3 with DA* 300 and Sigma at 500mm and they were exposed about right.
that is what I would expect to be Ok. I set the camera to manual, iso 100 and even with f32 and 1/8000 ( yes I know it is ridiculous)I still got the red blinkies in live view. I was also using the DA*300 . Maybe I should try again with my k5iis and see whether that behaves itself

Were you actually able to get a good image though? I have sometimes found with liveview on K5ii that you get the red-blinkies even when dialling in exposure compensation to try and counter-act it and the actual image has come out ok. I wonder if it is just a limitation of liveview metering?

i found it too bright for the focus to lock on anything, af or live view so just set to infinity, f8 and adjusted shutter until i had a satisfactory exposure then tweaked focus minutely each shot until it came out ok. the moon position was slightly diferent this time to last month as i was later so did not get as much crater detail as no shadows to define them , the final exposure was 1/500sec @f8 with Sigma 170-500 @400 and 430

My K3 certainly will not behave in live view, however I set it. I have however succeeded in getting some reasonable images using the viewfinder and setting the camera to manual. I got best results using autofocus but setting it to 27 pts as spot focus would not focus at all. I tried focusing manually but it is not very easy to see the exact focus and my manually focused ones were all slightly off. Focus peaking would be the answer but as previously stated, live view does not work at all for me.

I don't understand why some are having issues with supermoon photos, Live View issues on K-3? I grabbed a couple of rough handheld shots with my K-5 and 55-300 and they came out OK considering that they were grab shots. Using the viewfinder, P mode.
