Sunset over Old Ship Cottage

My parents-in-law live in this cottage in North West Essex, it's a 16th century cottage supposedly made from the beams of an old ship. In the 18th century it was a pub.

Beautiful and a very unusual type of architecture even for a thatched cottage. I don't think I've ever see that type of white cladding before.

More than possible, using reclaimed material for building has been going on for centuries.

Nicely exposed, wheres the light coming from on the hedge and the front of the building Tim? is it natural or is there a touch of HDR in here.

Nah no HDR, this was a single handheld exposure with on-camera flash (with Stofen omnibounce)! I spent quite a while dodging and burning trying to disguise the flash but there were limits how far I could push it, especially with the left end of the hedge.

I can believe they used to reclaiim wood in the 16th century, i only said supposedly as this cottage is at least 60 miles from the coast!

Edit: Sorry Gareth I missed your reply. I've been told the roof would cost about £25k to replace, and most of it should last around 30-50 years. They recently had just the ridgeline renewed, I think that was about £5k on it's own. When they bought the house 30 years ago it cost £3k! (The whole house, not the roof).

They managed to get some help from the parish council though by thratening to tile the roof! This house is right at the heart of the village, so the council wanted them to keep it thatched

Nice shot

Nice house

But

How close is it to the pub?

It may be the perfect location

In fact the village pub is behind the house and across a lane, about a 20m walk

Sounds pretty perfect to me as long as that is 20 metres not miles
