Superb. I used to sail round there, and the pic brings back many happy memories.

Not least getting covered in mud when trying to reach the Anchor Bleu (the pub) at low tide!

Another great pub in Chichester Harbour is the Royal Oak, where you can sail a dinghy right up to the front door at high spring tide. Looks very pretentious, but that never stopped us.

Thanks for that.

RAW converted with SP3.. The only thing I didn't do with SP was the sharpening.. which I still can't get the way I want it. I transferred the settings I use in GIMP, but it just doesn't quite do it.

Perhaps one of you will know; does SP use a type of unsharp mask to do this, or a different sharpening algorithm. I use UsM in GIMP normally, and find it gives nice results at the same setting every time.. these are..

Radius...... 5
Amount.... 0.4
Threshold.. 0

Oh, and George, thanks for the tip about Memory 1 for the colour..

EDIT: Hi George.. there were signs all around saying that the road at the front would flood at high tide, and with seaweed half way to the car park, I guess the got it good in the storms last week..

Luckily it was low tide and we could walk all round to the quay. There were a couple of marooned boats in the mud, but I didn't take any of them worth showing.. Just 'cos SP3 gives me 3 stops to play with, doesn't mean I should..

Cheers

I find I need very little sharpening with the K10D, so haven't really experimented with it much yet in Silkypix. As usual, there are a number of different options, and I have yet to explore them all.

What we are all waiting for, of course, is a MattMatic definitive guide.

Come on, Matt, what are you doing?

Memory 1 can be a litttle over the top in some cases, but often it's just the ticket.

Liam,
A radius of 5 in USM getting more like a LCE - Local Contrast Enhancement, and isn't really sharpening. Maybe that's why you can't get what you want!

Generally I find that a little sharpening in SP-DS3 is just fine - the present "Natural Fine" seems pretty close on most K10D images so far. However, I'll often pull it into Photoshop and do this: (applicable to Gimp too)

* Duplicate the layer
* USM: Radius 50, Amount 50%, Threshold 10
* Change blend mode to Luminosity

Some call this the "kick layer" - it performs a local contrast mask and can really give some punch. You may need to adjust the overal opacity of the layer or use a layer mask. But it's a great start

Like many others I'll split my sharpening into three phases: Capture, Creative, Output. If you want a really big read check out here:

(There's a tutorial about putting a fine edge on your sharpening skills at the bottom that's worth reading)

LOL @ George

Forgot to add that a little touch of noise reduction helps too in SP-DS3 - somewhere around 4 to 6 is usually enough along with the "Natural Fine" taste. And, like George, generally I need very, very little Capture sharpening with the K10D.

The *ist-D gave better results with the "Pure Detail" algorithm.

And I think that SP-DS3's sharpening algorithms are a little more complex than just a USM

You'll need to read the PDF first:
http://www.thelightsrightstudio.com/tutorials/PutAFineEdgeOnYourSharpeningSkills...

That explains the concept of Capture, Creative, and Output sharpening

Who said I'd finished with it??

You've got snow covered mountains to play with, so I'm keeping it for another week or two..

Matt,

I've had a read through the links, and I'll need several more, but I did try the edge sharpening layer and merging (blending??), on a flower I took, and it's quite nice..

Definitely more to it than I thought (surprised huh??).

Cheers
