Now if someone could please explain in simple terms [ since I have tried to follow John's tutorial and it doesn't work for me ] how to get the photo to actually display I would be grateful.

Yes.
Just open the photobucket image, and find the 4 different links:
Email & IM
Direct Link
HTML Code
IMG Code
Right click on the IMG code link > copy > then paste into the text of your post.

You have to upload your image to a 3 party i.e. photobucked or something similar and then copy the url into the add comment box,

What Nathan and Jack said, but don't forget once you have pasted in the URL (e.g. http://www.photobucket.com/blahblahblah.jpg) you then need to highlight everything from 'http' to 'jpg' inclusive and then click the "Image" button below the comment box. This will put an [IMG] and [/IMG] tag around your URL.

When I first spotted it the sky was in layers - going from pale cream at the bottom behind the roofs and darkening slightly to pale blue higher up - it was fantastic - so I grabbed the camera and by the time I got it up and ready for action - that was what had happened . Somehow I managed to avoid getting the street lights [ goodness knows how ].
Now the problem is - as I understand it the telegraph wires are normally considered a distraction - BUT do I shift them or not - my worry is that the pic could then become 'flat' . To me the wires that are there are giving some perspective .
Carry on - your thoughts are welcome [ but for my first one on public view be gentle - I've a HUGE amount to learn ]

I quite like the telegraph wires as they lead you into the shot, we are all on a learning curve of something or another.

Yes - spoke to the tutor tonight and showed him this - he looked , and thought , and said do not remove the wires
I asked for his reason - and like all of us said that they served a purpose there - one time when you break all the rules and it works better.
He's right - I had a fiddle with it and removed the wires [ had duplicated it ] and the photo was completely different - not nearly as interesting.

I have some thoughts re doing a few tweaks - but would like other opinions before I state my ideas .
This was almost an accident - it wasn't what I had intended to take - but by the time I got outside the rapidly changing light had indeed changed again
