Suggested Flashguns for K-x

Hi
I am looking to get a flashgun for my Pentax K-x mainly for portraits and occasional group photographs. However, the pentax flash guns seem very expensive and I am trying to get a flash gun on a tight budget. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Nigel

Hello welcome to the forum.
Your answer is probably already answered twice on the first page of the link and probably countless of times on the other pages. link
I'm sorry that I don't have the "puff" to go into it again.
If you've more specific questions I'm happy to answer them.
Stefan

I'm with Cheeky Chappy on this. Went to the link Stefan and lots of complicated info which will be useful one day,
But for beginners can anyone recommend a good, not too expensive flash for use with family portraits, groups etc. Some of the links are quite old and obviously new flashguns are probably released on a very regular basis. I also have a KX.

Just seen the Forum discussion"Which Flash" in the Flash section and the discussion of the Metz 48 which seems to answer most of the Qu's raised here - apologies should have seen it before!

Steve, there are even two topics titled "Which Flash?" on the first page alone, that's why I linked you to the page instead of the topic.

It really doesn't matter, I get lost in all the topics as well but to answer the "witch flash?" question monthly is becoming a bit of a drag

Maybe some of the experience forum members should make a good article about which flash to get and make it into a sticky.

Thanks for the link Stefan and thanks for the very quick response. Sorry for asking a question that has already been asked before. I had done some searching before posting this and got the impression that most discussions were not specific to the pentax k-x. I have not had a chance to study the links you sent me thouroughly yet but will do. Cheers Nigel

The camera doesn't really matter, by its age it might or might not do some functions.
Since the k-x is brand new it will do everything besides all the other modern Pentax won't do and that is TTL flash metering, however it does use the newer P-TTL but only the newer flashes support that. You can also use the wireless function as well if the flash support that.

This link would be useful to find out what a flash can. link

Go for the Metz 48 AF-1. It's a decent flash, well spec'ed and cheaper than Pentax's equivalents.

I've completely missed all these topics Stefan I didn't realise so many people were into witch photography

I think even the K-7 5fps frame rate will struggle as the witches make their escape on broomsticks

Stefan. I'm not sure if you meant the K-x can use TTL or if you meant it's like the K10--K7 etc it can only use P-TTL? If it can use TTL then CheekyChappy I possibly have an AF-500FTZ for sale which I used on my *istD which I have now sold. It's in what I would call Mint minus condition. Just a few MINOR scuff marks through use. Make me an offer around £200.00 and we can talk. You can't send PMs yet but I think you can respondto a one? I'l send you a PM and you can try to reply. CHEERS Vic.

Vic, just like the K10D-K7 the K-X can't use TTL either, that's what I meant.

Thanks for the offer Vic - I'm sure this is a good deal but outside my budget at the moment. I think I am heading more towards the metz 48 as I can get this brand new for less - although I do accept that it is a lower spec than your AF500

No problem CheekyChappy as Stefan answered my question your camera needs P-TTL and the AF-500FTZ is a TTL and NOT P-TTL, which is why it is only usable on manual on my K10 and I have 2 AF400T hammer heads I can use the same way. CHEERS Vic.

Vic I believe the AF-500 has an Auto-mode that you can still use but only with the ist* camera's you can use TTL metering.
They don't use TTL any more because the results were not accurate enough.
