The Pentax batteries have gold-coloured contacts, all the third party batteries I have seen have had silver ones, this being the only visible difference (other than the labels). So there might be some slight difference....unless someone else knows better!
Both my batteries have gold contacts; and look identical in every respect save the labels. The Pentax batteries have gold-coloured contacts, all the third party batteries I have seen have had silver ones, this being the only visible difference (other than the labels). One is Pentax, one is unbranded.

On the other hand, there would not seem to be much argument against putting a Samsung GX10 battery in a Pentax K10D, or vice-versa should we wish to.
John.

You come accross as being very anti third parties, but are you sugesting that a Samsung GX10 Battery is ok to use in the K10D.

It's hardly a high drain application so the contacts aren't going to make a difference really (unless the cheaper batteries use some REALLY naff material).
I agree it is a bit of a joke to charge that much, the battery is nothing special, and in terms of performance is exactly the same as most generic batteries, it's just the build quality and factory testing that differ, so you'd be unlikely to ever get a dud Pentax one.

Very much an amateur.

Yes, not the best comparison, but the only one that sprang to mind to make the point why spoil the ship for a halfpence worth of tar?
In context, if the batteries fail to deliver the same performance or do not last as long (in terms of operational life) they may well prove to be more expensive than the proper item.
This of course is a longer term view, and we have found that it generally borne out over a wide variety of situations.
John I also bought batteries for the K-10D on line, Melbourne, not Hong Kong. Cost about 10% of Pentax. They were in fact Minolta batteries for a now superseded camera and of the same quality as the OEM.Yes, not the best comparison, but the only one that sprang to mind to make the point why spoil the ship for a halfpence worth of tar?

I am also for uncompromising quality but a difference that makes no difference at all is not a difference!
