I am setting up my studio supplied by a friend and I have a question

I have some white BG in vinyl, paper and even in muslin but i have never used the vinyl I was put off using it because a fellow photog said I don't use it because it's to shiny ( is this true) should i stay away from vinyl the reason i ask is i want to buy it in black as i find the muslin to thin
and i will use black paper for studio work in the home

VInyl is good because you can wipe it clean so, initially the cost is higher than paper but it lasts longer. I have only seen people use white, I think black vinyl would be problematic

Because at certain angles it will reflect light and that will interefer with the exposure.

Well, that is my understanding at least but there might be another one or the more technically correct one. Sorry Ken if I jumped in the middle I think the questin was directed to you.

By the way, James you know the best way is really experimenting. That way you will get to the conclusion pretty quick and leave you with a great understanding.

If you have to really use vinyl as black BG try to put it at an angle from the spot you will be exposing, so any reflection won't be directed to the lens.
