Stu Stu Studio kit

Ok the time has come to get some studio lights. I have tried to get to the bottom of the flash verses continuous debate but the threads seem to be old. Feel free to point me in the right direction.

I have £3-400 to buy some sort of portable studio. I may do some video very infrequently. But mostly still portraits and I probably shouldn't rule out family shots.
I am toying with one of those pop-up backgrounds with a train, two soft boxes, a hair light and a multi-colour reflector.

The main queries are:
Flash or new-fangled low wattage continuous lights?
Soft boxes or umbrellas?
Any clues as to the best place to look? (it's a minefield out there)

Interfit do a home studio kit at £299 that looks fine. Then you only need a background.

Diatribe, the Jessops kits are for product shots but thanks anyway. If anyone is looking for a two lamp kit with a transparent base/background then check it out.

I do video work as well as Photography.

I had to upgrade the modelling lights on my studio strobes, to use them with video.
If I had to start today, I'd go hotlights or cfl for studio and p-ttl flash units for location...

Don have you never thought of using Kinoflos, I use the Diva-Lites quite often. They are low-profile, lightweight, cold, constant and accurate white balance. Although I find the colour temp a bit extreme so if I'm using tungsten tubes I will mix 3 tungsten with one daylight and vice versa. If you dont know them check them out here link
